kernel update 4.4.0-139 freezes LM 18.3 64-bit Cinnamon

Post by SuffolkPunch » Fri Nov 16, 2018 12:19 pm

Have had to revert to kernel 4.4.0-138-generic after I used Update Manager to upgrade the from 4.4.0-138-generic to version 4.4.0-139-generic.

Freeze symptoms: immediately after attempting to 'Safely dismount' an external USB HD, the keyboard and mouse ceased working. This happened twice, which means 100% of the time for this version of the kernel! No such problem occurs with kernel 4.4.0-138.

My system: LM 18.3 (64-bit Cinnamon).

Anyone else seen this?

Update: Freezing problem goes away after updating from 4.4.0-139 to 4.15.0-39.

So immediate problem is sorted.

Just hope it doesn't cause other problems...

Hello, SuffolkPunch.

Tried what would happen here when doing the same thing, i.e. safely remove a mounted USB harddisk.
Environment: Linux Mint 18.1 32-bit xfce, kernel 4.4.0-139(165) - yes, I am aware: not precisely the same Mint as yours.

On my system safely removing the mounted USB harddisk did not cause any problems. I.e. mouse and keyboard remained functional. No other symptom which suggested there might be a problem.

Best regards,
Karl

Haven't myself but that is NOT unusual in Linux. That's why the Mint update policy is so useful re kernel updates.

Hello, SuffolkPunch.

Tried to reproduce the reported problem on my Linux Mint 18.1 64-bit Cinnamon system, which is as close to your Linux Mint 18.3 64-bit Cinnamon as it will ever be:

Code: Select all

karl@voyager ~ $ inxi -Sxxx
System: Host: voyager Kernel: 4.4.0-139-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 5.4.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 3.2.7 wm: muffin
dm: MDM Distro: Linux Mint 18.1 Serena base: Ubuntu 16.04 xenial
Same result as before here: Selecting "safely remove" works as expected. I.e. no issues occur immediately afterwards. Keyboard and mouse remain fully functional.

Can you provide the sections from /var/log/syslog, which document the logentries around the 2 times, when you tried to safely remove the USB disk and when mouse and keyboard stopped functioning?
Without having any log entries, only the reported symptoms, any discussion will remain highly speculative.

Best regards,
Karl

Thanks Karl. The freezes occurred at roughly 15:25 and 15:35. here are the syslog entries around both those times.

When I try change this kernel from version ..138 to version ...139 or ...140 my system freezes after unmounting an external USB drive.
The keyboard and mouse die. Sometimes I can enter the system via ssh but most often I have to perform a hard reset.
What changes in kernel from version 138 to higher?

Best Regards
Marek

Hi Marek. Have you tried updating to kernel 4.15.0-39? That fixed this issue for me - see above.

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.
I made an upgrade to version 4.15.9 but this is a big leap and the first problem has arisen: my fs /home is type zfs and no longer mounted.
I'm sure that also VmwarePlayer will stop working and kernel modules will not compile correctly.
Unfortunately, I do not have time now to fight with new problems, maybe later.

Best Regards
Marek

When I chose to install 4.15.0-39, I selected it from the kernel versions listed by 'Update Manager > View > Linux kernels'.

Hi SuffolkPunch,

I just upgraded kernel to version 4.15.0-39 and then my system Cinnamon crashed.
I have returned to version 4.4.0-138 again.

Best regards
Marek
