Mint 19 Cinnamon- How to add custom application to Preferred Applications list

Post by abdelrahman » Mon Nov 19, 2018 1:35 pm

Hi,

I have downloaded Firefox from their website as I prefer using it over the one that ships by default with Mint. I wanted to make it my default web browser. Of course, when I open it, I get the dialog that asks me if I want to make it my default browser, but I wanted to find out how can I do it through the Preferred Applications settings.

The problem is there is no option to add custom applications. I tried adding a *.desktop entry for it, but that didn't fix the issue either. Is there a way I can achieve what I want?

Hi,

Under preferred application there should be an item in the drop down menu other application if you correctly created the .desktop file your FF version should show up there.

Unfortunately, it doesn't show up. My FF shows up in the Mint menu, but it doesn't show up in the other application list. Is there any specific item that I need to add to the .desktop file? Do I need to add the .desktop file somewhere other than /usr/share/applications?

I currently don't have access to the computer, but what I have done is duplicating the existing firefox.desktop file and changing the name of the application and the Exec line to point to my version of Firefox.

Not sure if that helps, but as soon as I go home, I will upload the file as well.

I think I have figured it out.

When I added "%u" after the firefox path in the Exec key, it showed up in the Preferred Applications. Seems like this was the problem.
