In file manager, go to /etc directory. Right click on an empty area. Select Open as root.

You can then edit the fstab file.

first you knew when you asked that question i didn't believe that, i didn't take it as a personal attack, i took it as a question well over 95% would of never asked. second i was asking you to walk me through editing the info. not telling you to help me with it, i simply forgot to say thanks at the end.
I think that was a good question because you'd be surprised what some users assume about options in programs.

or just in general. remember the old joke about peeps deleting their windows folder to save space, and then can't figure why windows won't load. thanks again guys.

Ok...ok, just putting that out there.

As a test I would edit the /etc/fstab file and change part the lines for the partitions from:

Code: Select all

ntfs nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0
to:

Code: Select all

ext4 defaults 0 2
reboot, then try Aptik again.
i'm assuming here so i won't change a thing till i find out if i'm right. are you referring to this line?

Code: Select all

part1 auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0
and since that line doesn't have ntfs in it does that mean changing it to the below i need to drop the ext4? thanks

Code: Select all

ext4 defaults 0 2
for refference this is the entire file.

Code: Select all

Just as a suggestion, copy the old fstab file and then edit the original fstab file.

The new contents of the fstab file would look like the following, so you can copy and paste this:

Code: Select all

/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x5000c500a9340734-part7 /home/mc2635599/Movie\040Series ext4 defaults 0 2

I noticed that:

Line 1 and 12 are mounting different partitions on the same disk as /home/mc2635599/TV\040Series
Line 8 and 15 are mounting different partitions on different disks as /home/mc2635599/MrGrimm's\040Docs

No sure if this is your intention, but I think you may want to check this out. Mounting two (or more) partitions as the same mount point is usually discouraged.

Wondering---did you set these mount points with the Mint's Disks utility?

Sorry, I had a line break in the coded area and it threw off my text. Now it's ok to copy and paste the coded text.

The lines and mount points are in my previous post.

o.k. after about having a stroke cause once that was done i couldn't boot back into my desktop. luckily i thought to boot to the live media and restore the back to what it was and reboot. while i really, really, really appreciate all the help from the two of you i truly think at this point i'd be better off just getting complete list for my added ppa's, software, and other items that aren't listed in the normal places. that way you guys can move on to helping others. again i truly do and have appreciated the help. thanks

Sorry about that. It must have been the mistakenly-added text to the coded text I gave you. That's why it's always a good thing to make a copy of a system file like fstab and if need be, delete the edited fstab and put back the original as fstab.

Bummer. I was hoping that you'd continue, to see if that would work.

By the way, was this beginning part still in the fstab after you edited it:

Code: Select all

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).

# /boot/efi was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=B8A0-96AB  /boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077      0       1

yea i made a point of only deleting and replacing the 16 lines. i was getting something about not being able to determine size. looked like it was of one drive, can't be sure though. as for the dup entries they have to be under the hood cause when i check gparted all the mounts look good as far as i can see. no dup info there.

I don't know what "no love either" means.

Did it boot or is it Aptik that's not working?

we wern't talking about aptik at the time, so no it would boot from the new fstab. as for 'no love', a way of saying tried it but no luck. thanks for the attempt though.

Try this content for the fstab. Then you have to reboot so that the partitions get mounted as EXT4.

Then see if Aptik will backup.

Code: Select all

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a
# device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices
# that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
# / was on /dev/sda2 during installation
UUID=d387f897-7fe2-4d4b-8dbe-a7a26dcbada0 /               ext4    errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /boot/efi was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=B8A0-96AB  /boot/efi       vfat    umask=0077      0       1

Good job chasing that down JerryF, through that mixed id/uuid mess, lol. It's hard to read and manage an fstab like that.

MrGrimm, If you have an ntfs partition then create any other one, label it the same, copy the stuff, then fix up an automount, don't undo the previous entry, then you end up with this duplication / issues. And you can't just go edit an fstab line from ntfs to ext4 because the id's change with each new partition.

JerryF pointed out the problem, that's where the focus is:
/dev/disk/by-uuid/5be0667d-4040-4dbb-bc7c-ff008f8c8d58 /home/mc2635599/Movie\040Series auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x5000c500a9340734-part3 /home/mc2635599/Movie\040Series auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/wwn-0x5000c500a9340734-part7 /home/mc2635599/Movie\040Series ntfs nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0

/dev/disk/by-uuid/cfff7c49-02a9-4f91-ac48-941895fb329b /home/mc2635599/MrGrimm's\040Docs auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0
/dev/disk/by-uuid/1a6c3580-ef8a-4934-885f-28c5c0301933 /home/mc2635599/MrGrimm's\040Docs auto nosuid,nodev,nofail,x-gvfs-show 0 0
the solution is there should only be 2 lines that come out of those 5, as previously mentioned. There IS some other kinds of multiple mount style solutions if you're trying to put two separate locations into one mount point. but you don't just write 2 lines like that, you have to deal with virtual filesystems or other solutions or something -not sure but it's not as above though.

So, if you dont go cross reference the id's in order to fix it in fstab, -that's what it's gonna take, and maybe JerryF has already endlessly drudged through that for you, then just delete all those 5 lines from fstab then fix it in the disks(those 2 spots that aren't mounted).

He doesn't have any NTFS partitions---all are EXT4 but they're being mounted as NFTS in fstab.
