Gimp 2.10
Just installed 19.1 beta to see the changes and I see that the old version if gimp is still here. Why isn't Gimp 2.10 installed? It's been out for a while.

Re: Gimp 2.10
Because Linux Mint 19.x leverages the Ubuntu 18.04 repositories, where GIMP 2.10 does not exist, as it was probably released afterwards.vinoman wrote:Why isn't Gimp 2.10 installed?

Re: Gimp 2.10
Why not just install the 2.10 version yourself if you like it? I have tried that and I am glad it's not installed on all my favorite Linux distros by default, because I don't like the version 2.10 of GIMP.
If you're looking for a greener Linux pasture, you won't find any that is greener than Linux Mint. ;)
Re: Gimp 2.10
I like Gimp 2.10 better than the old one, it has filters that are not in 2.08. What's the link to install it?
Re: Gimp 2.10
Internet search
"Ubuntu 18.04" "gimp 2.10"
and you'll get a lot of answers about how to install it.

Yeah, the flatpak is probably the best option here I think.JoeFootball wrote: ⤴Wed Dec 05, 2018 11:21 amhttps://www.gimp.org/downloads/vinoman wrote:What's the link to install it?

Re: Gimp 2.10
There also is an AppImage for GIMP 2.10 - I use LM-MATE18.3, so the GIMP PPA is not an option. It runs well for me. I also have the flatpak version installed, but I do not like or use it.
If you are a photographer and use darktable or RAWTherapee, this AppImage is worth trying because it is built with the RAW Importers for darktable and RAWTherapee. It also comes with a nice and useful collection of photography-related plugins.
This AppImage is not an official package - it is maintained by a third-party, Andrea Ferrero. He active on pixls.us, he understands how photographers use GIMP, and the AppImage is under active development. For more information on Andrea, go to https://pixls.us/blog/2018/09/support-a ... n-patreon/.
The AppImage is available for download https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-ap ... continuous. The current version with plugins is GIMP_AppImage-git-2.10.9-withplugins-20181129-x86_64.AppImage.
Download the file, make executable, and run.

Re: Gimp 2.10
I don't like the 2.10 version, nor do I like the AppImage version.
both are a PITA and the older version is faster and cleaner to use.
My only use for GIMP is to select an area of the total image and reduce the size of images.

There are considerably easier programmes for both of these tasks...

but tried to use it under Wine, and it is a PITA.... just not as simple as opening an image direct from the desktop and going to work with it.
I can get into and out of GIMP in about 15 seconds....
learned the kybd shortcuts and that is what I like.
I don't like Ksnip and the other program mentioned

Re: Gimp 2.10
Why closed this thread? There is NO solution.
It IS interesting.
GIMP - compete to PhotoShop is one of the most interesting applications in every Linux distro.
WHY it is not actual?
WHY it is not possible to upgrade it?
Re: Gimp 2.10
The person who posted the thread considers it solved; they managed to install the version they wanted. It's their decision to make.
If you want to start a discussion about the topic 'Why does Mint come with an outdated version of Gimp?' feel free to start a thread for that. This one is not closed, but it's also not about that.

Re: Gimp 2.10
IrfanView is the one programme I really missed when I left Windows. The nearest I have found for my simple needs (crop, brighten, add text,) in Linux is Fottox.AZgl1500 wrote: ⤴Wed Dec 05, 2018 5:22 pm

Re: Gimp 2.10
FYI I have a bash script that I found somewhere that allows me to use the file context menu to open files using Irfan. It takes a lot of the PITA out of using Irfan. I have also set Irfan as my default file association so a double click will open an image in Irfan.
I put the script in my ~/bin folder and then set the file association to invoke the bash script. The name of my bash script is ~/bin/irfan. Here are the contents of the script. Most of it is comments on how to use the script. This works for me on both Mint 18 and Mageia 6. Your mileage may vary.

Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash
# Add this bash file to the file associations using the following command:
#
# /home/<user>/bin/irfan %U
#
# Set up the file association in dolphin with the following procedure

# Find the file in dolphin
# Right click the .jpg or .png file
# Select Properties
# Select File Type Options
# Click on the +Add button to add an association
# Enter the command above to run this script..... /home/<user>/bin/irfan %U
# ok ok ok etc.
#
# After you do that Irfan should behave just like any other file association.
# Replace the "/home/brian" below with your relevant local location.
# Other file browsers might require a different sequence to set this up.
#
IRFANPROGRAM=/home/brian/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files (x86)"/IrfanView/i_view32.exe
ARGUMENTS=`winepath -w "$@"`
exec wine "$IRFANPROGRAM" "$ARGUMENTS"
If only the best bird sang, the forest would be a very quiet place.
Re: Gimp 2.10
@ cliffcoggin,
Was about to install Gimp.
Fotoxx seems to be more than enough for simple needs. Thanks for the tip regarding this Irfanview-like application.
Edit: Wondering if fotoxx-18.07.2-x86_64.deb is enough or if it is necessary to install all the deb files?!?!
Not much info regarding those extra files.
