tarballs are like zip files, you need to extract what is inside and install that see here for a short introduction to them

Hi Trippoxer,
I have a problem with tar balls myself, so I try to download .deb files if there is one for the stuff you want to download.
Deb files are automatically opened and installed in your PC with the Bebian Installer, Synaptic>debian-installer or gdebi.
I wonder if you knew about it.
