Audio Problems with Kazam on mint 19 Tara

Post by Berk »

I cannot get Kazam to record audio. It captures video perfectly but no audio. I tried setting preferences in audio and raising the audio volume from the speakers to max but it always returns to the default setting of 23% the next time I open it. This is version 1.4.2 I've tried everything I can think of but still can't record sound. Any ideas?

Hi Berk,

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Recommend trying SimpleScreenRecorder (SSR) in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) of Linux Mint 19.x but requires using their PPA or deb files for previous Linux Mint versions.

Main page - SimpleScreenRecorder - Maarten Baert's website
http://www.maartenbaert.be/simplescreenrecorder/

To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste ("Shift+Insert" or "Ctrl+Shift+v"), repeat for each command.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder simplescreenrecorder-lib
# if you want to record 32-bit OpenGL applications on a 64-bit system:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder-lib:i386

Hope this helps ...

Hi Administrollaattori,
The thing is, I do have the source checked but it makes no difference. I like the look of this program but it is being very uncooperative!

Hi Berk,

Okay, I do not see anything wrong with the results of the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, so that is a good thing.

This is an older computer and not very powerful for running Linux Mint Cinnamon version. You only have 2gb of system memory (ram) and if the computer allows for more, then you should get more system memory (ram) which is not expensive and it will make a huge difference. Getting an SSDrive would also make a huge difference in performance and they are reasonably priced now as well.

Why are you trying to record your desktop for what purpose(s)? I still recommend trying SimpleScreenRecorder (ssr).

It would also help to have screenshots of your Sound Settings.

Hope this helps ...

Hello phd21,
You are right. This is an old computer which originally came with Win Vista. It was not working well when it was given to me and sat in shelf for a long time. I have always been a Windows PC user but over the years I was getting fed up with the bloat ware, spy ware and sloppy errors in each new program. When Microsoft tried to sneak Win 10 onto an update, I blocked it and I vowed I would search for an alternative. Win 7 is just about done and so I dug out this old Toshiba and downloaded Mint 17, later upgrading to 19.
I realize it doesn't have enough RAM and the C|PU is slow but I wanted to become familiar with Linux before I switched my newer faster computers ( I have a lap top with 6 Gb Ram and a 2.6 GHz CPU. Also a desktop with A 3.3 Ghz CPU, 2 SSHD drives and a Accelerator card as well as 16 Gb RAM).

I have a multitude of Win software and tons of photos and videos. It will be a huge challenge to change everything over to Mint but I am nearly ready to make the switch. From time to time, I see a video clip that I'd like to capture and I just want to see what software is available with Linux.

I downloaded Simple Screen Capture and tried it. The audio is fine but the video quality was poor. Are there any other programs that might work on Mint 19 Tara? I am so done with Micro Soft!
Any suggestions will be welcomed.

Hi Berk,

If you can be more specific about the video clip you are interested in and where it is perhaps giving us a URL (web link), there might be other good options to use. YouTube videos and other website videos can easily be downloaded (usually) using "youtube-dl" and "youtube-dlg" and other applications (4K video downloader, etc...).

Photos and videos can easily be handled in Linux Mint using a multitude of excellent software. And, there are very good to excellent Linux and cross-platform applications for anything you used in MS Windows before available to install and use, just let us know what they are. There are many posts in this forum on this.

SSR has a lot of options and if the video is having trouble, please be more specific about the video issues, you can try various settings, like output options like mkv, mp4, etc.. and use the superfast or ultrafast options, even scaling the video. But, from your results of the "inxi -Fxzd" command you only have "Memory: 1332.4/1863.9MB" which means around 1/2 gb of free memory which is not much for video projects.

My ancient underpowered computer is not much better than yours, but I can use SSR to create training videos and record anything else on my desktop. But, I cannot view videos above 720p in fullscreen, anything 1080p resolution or higher has video stuttering, nor can I record them with SSR at the higher resolutions because of my computer hardware not SSR.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for your input. I must admit that I am spoiled with my desktop and the fact that I have super fast fibre optic (325 Mb /S) internet. I know that this old girl is not up to 64 bit and it isn't really worth upgrading the RAM. I think I will use one of the SSHD son my desktop and install Mint 19 on it so I can dual boot. It will be interesting to see how fast Mint Tara can be with the right equipment!
Again, thank you.

Hi Berk,

You are welcome...

Your older computer is 64-bit. I only have 4gb on this computer which is sadly maxed out at 4gb of system memory ram, but that made a huge difference over 2gb with everything as did the SSDrive. I think it was only $20us or less for the 2gb ram chip for my computer on Amazon.com or Ebay and SSDrives are $25-$50us+ and up at those same places.

I would highly recommend installing Linux Mint on your other computers as well which can easily be installed alongside of MS Windows or to replace it. You can even fully install Linux Mint to a USB stick 16gb or larger (32gb or more recommended) to try it that way. I do this as a backup and for a portable version.

Strange, because it works in my computers. What tells command aplay -l ? Install also pavucontrol an see if it sees Kazam when recording.

Code: Select all

apt install pavucontrol
