[SOLVED] Goodbye sore eyes Hello dark theme for FireFox

Post by premier69 »

So yeah, I have actually read the readme and managed to get this thing working for Firefox in Windows 10 but I have zero check that, --zero clues on how to get this thing to work with the Firefox in Mint.

https://overdodactyl.github.io/ShadowFox/#

I downloaded the Linux 64bit: shadowfox_linux_x64

but it has no file type?! How do I launch it? I tried typing in "shadowfox_linux_x64" from the terminal launched in the folder i have shadowfox_linux_x64 in.
I also got the ZIP file from github but again, huh?!

hi premier69!

I'm not familiar with package, and I'm new to linux and was curious so did some looking around. Couple things I see that may help, first- did you try this advice from the readme?
For all platforms: go to the latest release and download the respective file for your OS
If you are in Linux or Mac, you will probably need to run chmod +x [filename] for the OS to register it as an executable
"chmod +x [filename]" will look like chmod +x shadowfox_linux_64 that is entered into terminal while in the install directory.

not sure if that will help with your issue but I'd start there. also, try to start it using terminal in the installed to directory as you mentioned above:
I tried typing in "shadowfox_linux_x64" from the terminal launched in the folder i have shadowfox_linux_x64 in.
to be specific in terminal cd to shadowfox install directory and paste this command ./shadowfox_linux_x64

if you've tried both these to no avail, then my apologies as I do not wish to waste anyone's time. Others may be able to help and in general more information will be useful. Please open terminal, copy&paste then enter the command inxi -Fxz copy the results from that into your next reply and paste between code blocks using the </> button.

Also, if you do get errors in terminal from ./shadwofox_linux_64 command then please paste them into code block </> as well. Thanks!

open a terminal in the directory where you have shadowfox_linux_x64 then just drag the file in the terminal or type ./shadowfox_linux_x64
you get a permission denied if you didn't make it executable. rightclick on the file.properties/permission and enable execute

The thing with Firefox even with dark theme, ther "dark background light text" addon as well as some about:config tweak, firefox still briefly flashes white when loading new pages and such, it's annoying. it's not that Mint's redshift or firefox equivelent addon will help with that :(

Looks like you forgot./.
In the folder where you stored the file, right click and open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

./shadowfox_linux_x64
