GIMP Locks Mint 19.1

Post by Blipside » Wed Dec 26, 2018 12:58 pm

Good day. I thought I had posted this one, but it is not showing up.

Since upgrading to Mint 19.1 GIMP will lock my system up. I can open GIMP, but as soon as I try to select an image to edit everything locks up. I have tried with a few different images to see if this was a problem with a single image or a bigger problem. The only thing I can do is power off my system with the power supply switch. I was using GIMP 2.8 when I upgraded from 19 to 19.1. I have upgraded to GIMP 2.10 to try to fix the problem, but it didn't work. The only other reference I have found was a couple of Italians (Italian section) stating they have the problem too. Any Google searches just mentions how to install GIMP on Mint. I'm not sure what information would be helpful or what I need to look at to find an answer. Thank you for the help.

OS - Mint 19.1 Cinnamon
Cinnamon Version - 4.0.8
Kernel - 4.15.0-43-generic
Proc - AMD FX-6300
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GK107 (GeForce GT 640)

I had the same problem. I tried quite hardly to find a solution on Internet (as you did). Didn't find any (as you did not).
At the last I uninstall it, manually deleted GIMP setup files (they are somewhere at ~/ directory) and installed Flatpak distribution of Gimp version 2.10. After that it works again. I don't know why. I'd like to know that.

Hello Blipside and Welcome to the forums.

I suspect if may be your graphic card driver. Could you go to a terminal and type this command and post the output here?

Code: Select all

inxi -G
Thanks.

Hi, I have the same problem after upgrading to Min 19.1.
GIMP 2.10.8 is installed from PPA-otto-kesselgulasch.
To open files in GIMP I use File - Open as layer. It works.

PS Synaptic shows that I have 4 identical gimp-data packages installed. Maybe that's the problem. Nothing has been removed.

I updated to 410.78 NVIDIA drivers. The problem is still occurring.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GK107 [GeForce GT 640] driver: nvidia v: 410.78
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: nvidia
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa
resolution: 1680x1050~60Hz, 1680x1050~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GT 640/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 410.78

The upgrade was a bit of a pain in the rear. I used the following commands

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
- there was a problem with the signatures after this, so I ran the following command
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80 --recv-key 2388FF3BE10A76F638F80723FCAE110B1118213C
- it said that only one of the 12 signatures were updated
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-410
Rebooted computer
lsmod | grep nvidia
- Output from command
nvidia_uvm 786432 0
nvidia_drm 40960 3
nvidia_modeset 1040384 5 nvidia_drm
nvidia 16588800 178 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
drm_kms_helper 172032 1 nvidia_drm
drm 401408 6 drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm
ipmi_msghandler 53248 2 ipmi_devintf,nvidia

I had the same issue. If you open up files through the file manager - right-click, open with GIMP, it works, just not with the File/Open in GIMP.

I have the same problem after upgrading to 19.1. Like curtis72 I found the same work around.
I'm running 19.1 Cinnamon 64 bit with kernel 4.15.0-43 on an Intel i5 3570K with 16GB RAM. I have the OS and programs on Samsung 120 SSD. I have two 1TB hard drives for file storage. I've tried File/Open in Gimp to open files from both the hard drives and SSD and it froze my machine either way. My graphics info is:
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Turks PRO [Radeon HD 6570/7570/8550] driver: radeon
v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: ati,radeon
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1680x1050~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: AMD TURKS (DRM 2.50.0 / 4.15.0-43-generic LLVM 6.0.0)
v: 3.3 Mesa 18.0.5

So many with the problem and no one with a solution or an explanation? I have this problem too, so I have gone back to 19.0. I'll probably stay there until this problem is solved. They say the Flatpak version of Gimp works, but I don't like the idea of mixing too many package formats. Also, G'mic doesn't work with the Flatpak version. So there is total confusion these days :( .

Same problem here - flatpak-installation freezes, too.
Mint 19.0 was fine.

I tried updating Gimp to 2.10.8 from 2.8.22 and had the same results.

the solution is to do what curtis72 did use your file manager to open pictures with gimp. that works

this is a Cinnamon issue as it doesn't lock up my XFCE but if i logoff and log into my Cinnamon i get the same LOCKING
use CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE when your system locks up and it will log you out, instead of having to reboot

Trytip, thanks for the info on CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE. Opening with the file manager is not a solution, it is a work-around. I will give it a try.

Meanwhile, xcf files are opened without problems through the file-open, the rest (png, jpg) are opened through the file - open as layer

Interesting subject as I'm a heavy user of Gimp. I just upgraded to LM-19.1 from LM-19 just to test this out. Here's what I've found:

1) Right-Click open with gimp works fine
2) Drag and drop works fine
3) Open as layers works fine
4) Copy and paste works fine
5) Open via File > Open crashes mint

This happens whether I use the Otto PPA Gimp 2.10.8 or the appImage as well. Ironically when I tried LM-19.1 live using the default installed Gimp 2.8.22, all works as it should. So if you want to upgrade to LM-19.1, you really should do a clean install instead of a rolling upgrade.

I got tired of the foolishness and reverted back to LM-19 for now.

I've found a solution for me - It seems to be a cinnamon-config-related problem. I was able to fix this like that:
(You will lose some desktop-related settings - but if you want to use gimp ;-)

- rename hidden .config folder in your home-directory to .config_bak
- logout (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE)
- login -> a new .config-folder would be created
- gimp should work now
- rename new .config-folder to for e.g. .config_new and .config_bak back to .config
- copy content from .config_new to .config (sudo cp -r .config_new/* .config/)
- logout / login
- gimp should work normally
- pimp your desktop :-)

Don't forget - a backup saves your data!

regards,
Andy

EDIT: deleting .gimp-2.8/ or .config/GIMP/ makes no difference.
the issue here is Cinnamon NOT Gimp

I think, it's a problem with upgrade script. New user profile work with gimp without problems - even with cinnamon.
