Have you been experiencing any strange behaviour or tried anything unusual before this occured ?

Do you maybe have a dual boot ? If so, can you boot on your other OS ?

Strange behaviour, no . . . but I've just remembered that I installed updates . . . :?: Could that have caused the problem?

And, no, I don't have a dual OS :(

What is the update that you have done ? Was it to switch to a newer Mint version (for example 18.3 to 19) ? Or just regular updates ?

There may have been a kernel update that messed things up. Can you access grub to boot with the older kernel ?

Try holding the Shift key or Esc key on boot to see if you can make the menu show up : https://askubuntu.com/questions/16042/h ... -boot-time

Then you should be able to select the previous kernel version and see if it boots.

I think you have some of the application does not allow to create root directory or maybe some of the files are missing.

Okay, so it seems I get the menu by default and I had already tried Advanced, then recovery mode - the pic I posted initially is what I get when I try to start in recovery mode...?

This is what I get when it starts 'normally'

Instead of the recovery mode, can't you access another (older) kernel version ?

If not, you will have to boot on a live CD or live USB to fix things. Here are some steps to try : https://askubuntu.com/questions/41930/k ... n-block0-0

Thank you for your help
I couldn't access an older kernel but rebooting from the usb has worked and thankfully I don't seem to have lost any files etc.

The problem I have now is when I try to install updates (which I think may have caused my problems in the first place) - I will start a new thread (viewtopic.php?f=47&t=285010&p=1575516#p1575516) with a screen pic of the message I get when I try to install the updates

Thanks again for your advice and suggestions

So have you managed to reboot normally now ? Without the live USB I mean, it's not very clear in your message :)
