Mint 18.0 Cinnamon freezing

Post by Bob M »

A friend has just changed to Mint 18.0 Cinnamon from Win8.1 via Win10 and whilst the installation appeared to go OK his computer has now taken it upon itself to freeze intermittently.

The only way out is to hold the power button down for 5 secs.

So I guess the question is “What is the correct way to locate what’s causing the problem?”

Does Mint have something like Windows Task-manager that might give a clue?

All help appreciated

Bob

Just a few guesses. Does he have the correct 32 or 64 bit download for his system? How old is the computer? If it's old, he may have better luck with Mate or Xfce.

Hi Sleeper 12

Yes, I should have mentioned, the computer is an Acer Aspire ZC606 which has 4gig of RAM and A 2GHz Intel Celeron quad core I understand.

The reason he installed Mint 18.0 Cinnamon was I had the disk. :D

He initially upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10 and everything turned to custard, so I recommended Mint, any version, but I had a disk for 18.0 and have had an excellent run with it.

(I sometimes miss having to fix my computer after every update.)

Oh, he does have the 64 bit installation and better specks than I have.

Cinnamon may not be the best choice for that pc for whatever reason. As I said, try Mate or Xfce. Or, wait for further advice. :)

He's bringing it around so I'll try those if I can't locate the problem.

Always easier with the machine in front of you isn't it. :D

Re: Mint 18.0 Cinnamon freezing (Solved)

Well, the owner advises that the problem has fixed itself, so we will never know what was causing the freezing.

Thanks for your input sleeper, but I guess I might as well call this thread solved even though we'll never know how. :D
