Updating Cache, bluetooth, wifi, delayed caps off and Spotify

Post by aPlayer »

Hello LInux MInt COmmunity, unfortunately I have some problems that I do not know how to solve them since I am also a beginner regarding Linux.
I searched on google and stuff and could not make it to work unfortunately.
I installed LInux MInt 64 on my Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBM multiple times, had some problems, solve some of them, learnt more regarding Linux and new problems also appeared.

As a note, I followed 100% the steps in order to create a bootable USB stick, scanned it both before reinstalling linux and also the scan before install and it gave me 0 errors and the Mint was downloaded via torrent.
THe OS is Linux Mint Cinnamon 64 bit 19.1.

1. [ SOLVED ] Updating Cache is not working at all. I tried various fixes on google but I managed to make non of them to work.

Before, I think it worked before doing something. I made an update via Update Manager but after that it worked no more. WHat I've done is on this page :
https://www.pcsteps.com/2628-install-st ... untu-play/
and I executed this command : sudo apt-get update --fix-missing && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y where it says Firstly, we do a full system update with:

I also installed DIscord and Spotify with no problems after I did those things.

2. [SOLVED]Bluetooth, can't enable it at all, not before ( previous clean mint reinstalls and not even now ). WHen I open BLuetooth it just says "Bluetooth is disabled by hardware switch" and the enable button is grayed out, can't click it or anything.

3. [SOLVED]Wifi is not showing up at all. My home wifi is not comming up and also my samsung 8+'s hot spot is not showing up. WHen enabled in Network it just says unavailable.19.1

4. When I am making a letter bigger, I use the Caps Lock button to activate the capital letters and switch it off after I typed a capital letter but sometimes the caps lock is delayed, examples can be seen in this post, upper. Well, it might not appear as a problem to you and all but when dealing with passwords, it is a problem. How can I fix it?

5. SPotify, it randomly loses sound, even when idle or even while being the only thing running. I've downloaded SPotify from the official website and ran the installer. Any help?

6. I start to notice that MInt is kinda running slow on my laptop, what can I do in order to improve the situation? There might be some problems with the drivers or something like that?

We can fix the repo issues with

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list
echo "deb http: //repository.spotify.com stable non-free" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
The following should fix wifi/bluetooth

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt install git dkms build-essential
git clone https://github.com/jeremyb31/ideapad-laptop.git
sudo dkms add ./ideapad-laptop
sudo dkms install ideapad-laptop/1.0
Reboot

THe WIFI and BLuetooth worked, were set up, tested and it works. Can you also explain in a basic and simple way the code? I am curious.
Reharding the repo issues, I tried to run the first command " sudo rm/etc/apt/sources.list " and it is presenting me with the following error :

rm: cannot remove '/etc/apt/sources.list': No such file or directory

Can you also tell me the logic and the idea behind this code? Maybe I can fix the code to make it work.

The first 2 lines of code should have removed the one unneeded file and fixed the duplicate entries in another file. The code that fixed wifi and bluetooth is 4.15 kernel source code patched with updates from newer kernels. Lenovo changed something in BIOS a few years ago that makes wireless blocked in Linux for some Lenovo models, the solution is to add the model name to a quirks list in the source code for ideapad-laptop and compile

Ok, and do you have an idea in how to fix the duplicated things?

Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
1: deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free
2: deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free
The duplicated entries can be removed:

Ok, I went into driver manager and it managed to download the caches after I went into maintanance and cleared the duplicated entries.
Now I entered in updates panel and clicked "refresh" and this error appeared :

I also uninstalled SPotify and same thing keeps popping when I try to refresh on updates and also install them.
I uninstalled Spotify by right click on it and uninstall and went again to clear duplicated stuff.

I went into driver manager
:?:
There was no mention of driver manager. You would need to open Software Sources from the application menu.

2: deb http://repository.spotify.com stable non-free
The duplicated entries can be removed:
Software Sources: Maintanance: Remove duplicate entries (or some such)

If you want to do it manually:

Code: Select all

xed admin:///etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
when prompted, type in your password. In the file which opens, delete the second line. Save and close the file.
Now run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update

If you are not going to install Spotify again, you can remove it's repository:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list
And then run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update

By the way, it is a good idea to create new threads with titles more adapted to specific issues to attract attention. As it is now it is too broad.

Ma friend, I have a question : how do you know to use commands in Linux? Where did you learnt and all?
