[SOLVED]script using mpack stopped working

I have been running Mint for years and for about 6 months I have been sending a report to 8 recipients using mpack.
I updated from Mint 18.2 to 19.1 about 2 weeks ago and now find mpack no longer supports pdf files.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Here is a sample of the command line which did work

mpack -s 'My December report' ../pdf/NE.pdf someone@example.co.uk

I decided to remove the 1.6-8.2 version of mpack and install the Debian Jessie version which is 1.6-18 and it worked.
The update program informed me that I should update back to 1.6-8.2 again. Seeing as I had downloaded the earlier version to my laptop I let it go ahead.
Well now it still works so I can only think that something had been missing which is now there.
Ah well all ends as ends well.
