[SOLVED] Firefox: can't delete history anymore

Post by Function »

Hi there,

Suddenly it's impossible to delete de history of Firefox anymore.

After a short study of the possibilities of the human body  it is very much needed to remove some site from the history of Firefox.

Linux mint 17.2

Firefox Quantum 61.0.1 (64-bit)
Preference > Privacy & security > Browser Privacy > History:
Firefox will 'use custom settings for history'
- (disabled) Always use private browsingmode 'Clear History'
- (disabled) remember my browsing and download history
- (disabled) remember search and form history
- (disabled) clear history when firefox closes

(I tried other settings in "Preference> History" with no effect)

Set that to "enabled". Then close FF and launch it again.

Side issue, not related to the reported issue:
Firefox 61.0.1 is a pretty outdated version.
Even on a stock Mint 17.2 installation, Update Manager should have offered to update Firefox to Firefox 65.0 by now.
The question raises why Firefox on this Mint 17.2 is such an old biest still?

That didn't work for me. After the relaunch still the history there (cookies cleared? had to aprove google again).
Also tried "Clear recent History" with no effect.

@karichen:
Don't know why FF isn't updated.

In view of the fact that Mint 17.x will reach end of life in May, I advise to do a clean installation of Mint 19.1. Not much use to keep tinkering with a system that'll be dead in a few months.

Hello, Function.

About your problem that your Firefox history cannot be deleted:
Perhaps either of the following 3 threads from the Mozilla Firefox forum helps: HTH.

About the side-issue that Firefox 61.0.1 has not been updated to 65.0:

What does the terminal command apt-cache policy firefox display? Post the screen output, please.
Have you blacklisted Firefox in Update Manager perhaps?
Have you disabled stability level 3 in Update Manager (As I remember Firefox was a level 3 update in Mint 17.x)

Regards,
Karl

Hi, Function.

Congratulation on upgrading to Firefox 65.0. :) Nothing blocked or blacklisted. Suggests that you do not check what Update Manager offers you too often, do you? - Anyway.

The still open issue, which made you start this thread: takes us back to the 3 threads in the Firefox support forum, which I had mentioned in my previous post.

Karl

Hello Karl,
About your problem that your Firefox history cannot be deleted:
Perhaps either of the following 3 threads from the Mozilla Firefox forum helps:

Browser history will not delete even after I read and tried all suggestions posted here-goes for individual entries as well as deleting entire history.
Cannot delete history not matter what I try.
Clearing browsing history does not work

HTH.
I took the first option: It worked like a charme.
deleted the "places.sglite" an "places.sglite-wall"
(hamburger icon (right high) > help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory "Open Directory" = /home/t/.mozilla/firefox/mwad0hks.default)

after deleting the files (and relaunch FF) all of "History" was gone : (
But "places.sglite" an "places.sglite-wall" were back again and "Clear Recent History" worked again like it use to.
Enabled "Remember Browsing and Download History" and that works also like it use to be.

So thank you very much and now can the misses use the computer again

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Help -> Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Directory:
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Great!
In case you would like to restore the boomarks, which you must have lost by nuking the file places.sqlite, Firefox should be able to restore them from the backups, which it creates automatically in regular intervals.
The backup files bookmark-yyyy-mm-dd-number-randomcharacters.jsonlx4 are located in the directory /home/t/.mozilla/firefox/mwad0hks.default/bookmarkbackups.

The instruction how to restore your bookmarks from these backups can be found here: Restore bookmarks from backup - section "Restoring from backups"

Hi Karl,

Apparently it was precision nuking of "places.sqlite" because the "Bookmarks" are still there...
Maybe it wil be needed another time or by somebody else :)

I think you deserve an icecream this evening.

Have a nice one.
