Copy 18.3 data files to 19.1 [Solved]

Post by JoHubb » Tue Feb 05, 2019 7:21 pm

I have ended up for all sorts of reasons with both 18.3 and 19.1 versions of Mate.

How best to copy data files (.mp4; .flac, .png etc) from the 18.3 version to the 19.1?
I am not very Linux literate - I can use the terminal if not too complicated - in other words, when I use the terminal I like to understand what I am doing.

Thanks!

Just go to the folders where those files are and copy the contents then paste them into the folders in LM 19.1. or you can backup the folders/files using Aptik or other backup program.
good luck

Thank you kato181.

Not sure I can access 18.3 folders from 19.1.

How to do that?

For us to see what your disk(s) looks like, copy and paste the result of this command from Terminal:

Code: Select all

lsblk

In one OS (e.g. 18.3) you should see the partition for the other OS (e.g. 19.1) under "Places" or some such. Double-click to access it.

Also do what JerryF said.

Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Thanks. To be clear, I am running a quadruple boot system with 18.3 as default. Originally it was triple boot but I had to install 19.1 to solve a problem - this was already dealt with on these boards.

The other boots are Windows 10 and Kubuntu.

I could not find a folder (?) on any disk called 'Places'.

From what I can tell, Mint 19.1 is on sdc in artition sdc7. When you open file manager, do any of the other partitions appear on the left column?

Re: Copy 18.3 data files to 19.1

Mint 19.1 is on sdd3.

On the left is a list of disk drives. From 19.1 I can access the disk drive containing 18.3 and open the folders. However, it will be a laborious process copying many GBs of data manually from 18.3 to 19.1.

Perhaps I should uninstall this version of 19.1 and use the published method to upgrade my 18.3 to 19.1?
