how to access desktop mint from mobile app - remote desktop

Post by minty_22 »

i have 4 desktops, 2 have windows and 2 have mint,

i am able to remote desktop into my two windows desktops from microsoft's rdp app from google play,

but i cannot find any app to log into my 2 mint desktops, both are on mint 18.3

i can remote into my 2 mint desktops from each other using the desktop remmina app, but when i travel i dont want to carry my laptop, mobile is easier

ive tried several mobile apps but none work with mint

anyone know any solutions?

The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) should be the same regardless of application or OS, hence a protocol.

Remmina supports several protocols, RDP being one, but I don't know what it defaults to. When your two LM boxes connect via Remmina, is it via RDP?

I would say that's your issue with using the RDP mobile app, as VNC uses the RFB protocol. :)

I don't have Remmina in front of me, but there's got to be a way to set it for RDP.

I haven't used this myself, but it looks like it will do what you intend to:

philotux's idea is a option as well. The bottom line is, as long as the mobile app and the desktop app are using the same protocol, it should work.

@ minty_22

You might need to install remmina-plugin-rdp .
You can view a list of available plugins with

Code: Select all

apt-cache search remmina-plugin

i wasn't using rdp for linux, i was using .. i think it's called vnc - vino

the app also said it supported vnc, so i was expecting it would work,

i will try out the realvnc on my mint machines and report back here soon to see if it works from my mobile

this isn't free, you need to buy a subscription

im looking for a free way to connect to my desktop,

im using vino as server and remmina as the viewer
i can already connect to it for free by using a laptop, just not mobile

Looks like to be free for home users, but maybe you are looking for professional/enterprise use. Then it'll cost €.

you are looking at the "viewer" it's free,

but the "server" is not free,

i think i need the vnc server installed on my mint machine in order to use the viewer,
so the viewer is no good unless i buy a subscription for the server on my mint machine

i installed that company's realvnc "viewer" on my mobile, but when i try to connect it says "the authentication mechanism requested cannot be provided by the computer"

im not sure why i can't connect using this mobile app.

remember, i am able to connect using another linux machine with remmina,
