Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi "SOLVED"
I am running LM 19.1. no sound is coming out from the display port when connected to my new tv
On the same computer running windows 7 sound everything works fine. I have a extra hard drive with win 7 on it.
I have been online trying too find a fix with zero results, many many hours of searching and trying things.
no hdmi option shows up in my sound file or pulse audio.
I am looking for someone who has the same computer, who had the same problem, found a solution, and tell me how they fix it.
I have been using LM every 5-7 years. I am no expert using a terminal, I can only use a terminal if given the proper commands.
thank you very much

(March 1 2019 update. problem has been solved)
With the much-appreciated help of MrEen the problem has been solved. I never could have fixed my sound problem myself. He worked on it every day, for 8 days straight! I can't thank him enough.

Before you start making changes to your computer in the terminal, make sure the post you are referencing too has a similar computer set up, the same as yours and has a similar problem, don't just start typing in commands in the terminal hoping it will get fixed, Again take snapshots restore points.

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
No consolation, similar problem with a T430 connected to an external monitor that purports to have sound, connected via displayport to hdmi cable (have tried direct from laptop and via docking station). It does show up in sound settings "HDMI/DisplayPort Built-in Audio", but no sound. Checked and double-checked the cable - stated to support audio. Don't have any windows hardware to check against. If you find a solution I'll be interested!

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
Hi row1234, and welcome to the forum.
Install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.) Chances are, all you need to do at the moment is go to the Playback tab and change the output from the built-in audio to the HDMI/DP output. You may need to check the Configuration tab and Output Devices tab to make sure things are set correctly and not muted.
If this isn't helping, paste back the output of running
This should be solvable without too much effort.

in the terminal and include that output as well. This should be solvable without too much effort.
Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
I have installed pulse audio and there is no option to connect to the display port/hdmi on the tv

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
I've been helping with sound issues for just over a year now, and I don't think I've ever asked for this, but could you post the output of running
You have 2 graphics cards and neither are showing in aplay for HDMI sound. Your Intel card shows 00:02.0 so the bus for it's sound should be 00:02.1. The nvidia is showing 01:00.0 and the bus for it's audio should be 01:00.1 based on what I've seen over all this time. I'm rather surprised neither are showing.
It is possible you need to boot into your BIOS and either look for sound related settings that are disabled, or GPU settings that are disabled (maybe change GPU to discrete?) Do you know if the DP port you're plugging into is on the Intel card?

thanks again for taken you time to help me
someone on line also mentioned going into the bios, I did it and not see any audio adjustments in the bios, So I booted the computer up with windows 7 and updated the bios ,once again I did not see any tab for audio adjust. Remember the audio works fine when booted up in win7, if it was a bios problem I feel it would affect win 7 too. the rules out a cable related problem too
here is the output you asked for

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
To MrEen
I reread your last post and went into my bios again to make sure I did not miss anything you mentioned, If you are going to take the time to help me, I need to do my part.
I changed the setting to to discrete, like you mentioned, I was very hopeful that was the problem but when I rebooted and connected to the tv , there was no Hdmi available.
I don't know the difference between the 2 setting but It looks like I was using the wrong one. I have neversaw that mentioned in any threads LM running on a thinkpad, That tip might help someone else
best regards row

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
Hi row.
I've fallen into a rabbit hole looking at this issue. According to this arch wiki, the DP port is hardwired to the nvidia card. When you say changing to discreet there was no HDMI available, do you mean sound or sound and video?
Can't remember how I stumbled onto it, but this page that has a fix, but I'm not advanced enough to suggest going that route. I don't fully understand it myself, but I get the gist of it. There's further stuff about that here as well.
I won't bother with the other stuff I've read as it didn't lead to something I could recommend trying.
So let's start with with a couple of things I have a gut feeling about:
1. Put the computer to sleep, then wake it up and see if HDMI sound is available.
2. If no luck with that, paste back the output of
3. I'm still trying to research a program you could install called Bumblebee that might get us past this issue. If there's anyone out there in Mintland that uses this, please feel free to join this discussion.
Still trying to come up with anything else that may be helpful.

aplay -l
to see if a second card has been added to the list. If so, we probably just need a configuration change to get it working. If it didn't add anything new, paste back the output of
lsmod | grep hdmi
. If that just returns to the prompt with no output, try sudo modprobe snd_hda_codec_hdmi
then look at aplay -l
again. Finally, paste back the output of
ls -l /etc/modprobe.d
as well as cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf | tail
The dmesg output basically looked promising in that it didn't show errors or other weird stuff, so I'm still hopeful we can get this solved. The last 2 outputs I'm just looking for anything non standard that could be blocking HDMI audio.
Good luck.
Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
Sat was a busy day for me and I am just getting to the computer,
in one of the posts you liked to bumblebee was discussed, bumblebee program supports optimus , since our last exchange I installed bumblebbe and enabled optimus.
after installing it was not to be seen on my computer, I looks like there is no configuration for it and it just works in the back round. after the install there was no changes in the sound
I hope adding optimus does not throw your work off, if mit does I will remove it.
here are the other commands you ask for
thanks once again rowland

in my testing last night I click on something in the nvidia panel and my screen turned black I did get the screen showing on the tv but no mouse, rebooting my computer in booted into a black screen, I ried several times rebooting the lixun sign on screen come and I was able to sign in , but computer went black.
Before installing bumble bee I made a restore point in timeshift. I used that restore point to get my computer going again. Timeshift save me a lot of time.
I am not going to intsall timeshift again unless you suggest it,
I am going to send you the terminal requsets again from your next to the last post. since my computer has changed thanks rowland

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
Well, the outputs look good, except for the missing HDMI. Let's get a full look at your sound setup. In the terminal type
Another thing I'd like to see is the output of
cd
followed by wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
and when it asks, allow it to upload the output and paste the URL it gives you back here.Another thing I'd like to see is the output of
ls -l /lib/modules/4.15.0-45-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
Your list of kernel modules was fine. Unfortunately the script had an issue and didn'y upload the output. Run
After running the script/saving the file, type
bash alsa-info.sh
again but this time save the file locally. It's quite a large file so I don't know that you could paste it here so here's a workaround that I think will work. After running the script/saving the file, type
ls
so you get a listing of all the files where you can copy the weird filename that was created, then do cat [paste filename here without brackets] | nc termbin.com 9999
That should give you a link you can paste here.Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
it turned up empty, I must be doing something wrong. I went into my file system to delete the old kodi logs and I saw the alsa-info.sh file next to old kodi logs. I opened it up, the file had a only the numeral 1 in it,

I'm sorry, I thought it saved to the same dir it ran from. Look in /tmp or
My run just now was alsa-info.txt.YtQZzeldZs

Re: Lenovo t520 no sound to tv, displayport to hdmi
Yeah, we had a spot of miscommunication. Mostly my fault. As bash alsa-info.sh doesn't look like it's running for you now, try the whole thing again:
Make sure to save locally this time and at the end it will give you the location. I just checked, and it will be copyable.
Then you type
That should do it.
Code: Select all
wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
Then you type
cat /tmp/[paste without brackets] | nc termbin.com 9999
That should do it.
