VNC Client with FTP

Post by Thomsterdam » Mon Feb 25, 2019 8:38 am

Hi there,
To download files from my church server, I have used UltraVNC on Windows. The good thing of UltraVNC is, that it includes an FTP option with which I can download/upload files from the server. The server runs on Windows XP (... I know!!) FYI: I have no control over that computer, in the sense that I cannot install new software on it.

After switching to Linux MInt (19.1), I have been using a Virtual Machine with Windows 7 to connect with UltraVNC. As you can imagine, this is a bit of a hassle, as I need to start up my VM for this purpose only.

I have tried to connect with a number of VNC connection programs in Linux: RealVNC and Remmina. They both work for getting control over the server, but I cannot find a way download files from the server. RealVNC reports: "This VNC-compatible Server software is non-standard, and may fail to work. (...) set the ProtocolVersion parameter to "3.3" I have done that but FTP tab in the server window I get this message: "VNC server does not support file transfer". As I have been able to transfer files with UltraVNC, that report cannot be true. Apparently the server is of a version that is not compatible with RealVNC (???).

Can anyone give me (newbie proof) instructions of getting the files from the server?

Thanx,

Thom
BTW: I have tried to use Filezilla to connect with FTP, but I get no access.

Hi,

I can suggest filezilla ftp server or the firefox extension FireFTP
Alternatively xampp portable

But, in any case, you need to run the ftp server as a service so you need admin right

@lordmax: As you may/could have read: I cannot install any software on the server nor use Filezilla for FTP. Your answers do not really give any solution for my specific situation.

Hi

I will retry

You can give a try to the portable version of xampp
And also filezilla exists in the portable version (but I don't know if the server version works in a portable version)

And more
As stated, to run an ftp server as a service (that's what you need) you have to be admin... I can't do nothing for this.

So yes, I gave an answer to your question only that it is not the answer you wanted to have, sorry

If the XP machine is running XP professional it can be set up to run as an FTP server. If that is the case then you should be able to use filezilla.

Hi Thomsterdam,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

In the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)" you will see Remmina and I would recommend right-clicking it and installing all the recommended and suggested packages and related plugins that you want. There is also a PPA for newer versions of Remmina.

If the client SSH "openssh-client" is not already installed, then install that.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install openssh-client
If you have the Linux Firewall enabled, like everyone should, you may have to allow FTP and or RDP ports by adding firewall rules or temporarily disable the firewall to see if that is causing issues.

This console terminal command updates the firewall to allow FTP

Code: Select all

sudo ufw allow from any to any port 20,21 proto tcp

If you were able to FTP transfer files before using UltraVNC, then the remote host server should already be setup for FTP shared folder access. I think once you are connected to the remote computer host using Remmina using VNC or RDP, that you can just bring up the host file manager right-click to copy and paste files or folders to or from their Win XP computer and your Linux computer? Assuming your firewall allows FTP, you should also be able to use any FTP client including most file managers to access their FTP shared folders.

In Remmina you can also just create a new connection and choose SFTP (see screenshots) and once connected you can click toolbar buttons or right-click to upload or download files and folders. Personally, if all you want to do is be able to upload or download files to the remote host computer using FTP/SFTP, then using a file manager would be easy and you can bookmark the connection for easy future access. Remmina and RDP (remote desktop program) applications might be overkill for what you want to do. If you want to run applications on the remote computer using its operating system, then RDP apps are great for that.
