Failure to send email with nordvpn dual boot

Post by GELvdH »

On my dual boot (Win10/linuxmint 19.1) system I run nordvpn on both sides of the dual boot. On neither side will either my gmail or yahoo mail send email via the SMTP server when nordvpn is running. I have changed ports to 465 and 587, neither makes a difference. Deleted and reinstalled both of my email addresses, no change. On my solely linux laptop I am having the same problem, will not send email. Both systems run nordvpn and MEGA.nz cloud. Any suggestions?

The first thing I'd try is to check if nslookup gmail.com works, and if it does I'd then try ping -c 3 gmail.com. If both of these work then I suspect it's something in the nordvpn setup, otherwise I'd suspect that gmail is actively blocking the exit node from nord's server.

EDIT: to elaborate, if the nslookup fails I would suspect your DNS server, if nslooup returns the ip address but ping fails, I would suspect gmail is blocking you vpn exit node ip address.

I tried both of your recommended tests and here is what I got.
gunter@Gunter-Desktop-2:~$ nslookup gmail.com
Server: 103.86.96.100
Address: 103.86.96.100#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: gmail.com
Address: 108.177.122.19
Name: gmail.com
Address: 108.177.122.18
Name: gmail.com
Address: 108.177.122.83
Name: gmail.com
Address: 108.177.122.17

gunter@Gunter-Desktop-2:~$ ping -c 3 gmail.com
PING gmail.com (108.177.122.18) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 108.177.122.18 (108.177.122.18): icmp_seq=1 ttl=45 time=60.6 ms
64 bytes from 108.177.122.18 (108.177.122.18): icmp_seq=2 ttl=45 time=65.4 ms
64 bytes from 108.177.122.18 (108.177.122.18): icmp_seq=3 ttl=45 time=63.6 ms

--- gmail.com ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2002ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 60.644/63.232/65.417/1.980 ms
So it looks ok so far but than I uninstalled nordvpn and it still will not send emails. I tried this on both my laptop and desktop which are running linuxmint. This is getting very frustrating.
I also tried it with yahoo.com, same results.

I don't know about yahoo but gmail requires one to reduce it's security setting to allow third party (email clients) access. Try logging into gmail with chrome browser. Not sure if FF or other browsers make it as easy as chrome but using a browser will prove your access and if you log in successfully you can change the security level to allow your email client.

Logged into gmail.com into settings but could not find anything about allowing third party clients or in security settings. What did I miss? Did the same with yahoo, again could not find anything. Tried both Chrome and Firefox browsers.
