Post by MrGrimm » Fri Mar 15, 2019 8:58 am

i just downloaded a a new plex media server version in .deb format and when i click to install the install box just closes without any error message. i have tested with other .deb files to see if it might just be plex media server and i get the same thing. without any error message i have no idea where to start to look to correct the issue. help and or suggestions greatly appreciated. thanks

those *.deb files are just an archive - - so you can actually UN-pack them,
with an with an archive manager, & thus check if they do have any errors.

do you get any errors when you run that *.deb file in Terminal ?
- - this method, is far more fun, as you do have to Type everything Exactly - or the terminal command won't work.

it's not the .deb files that are broken. it's software centers handling of them that is broken. now that said i rightclicked and opened with qapt package installer and they install just fine. still would like to get to the bottom of why they would install the normal way. thanks

if you R/click that *.deb file - is there an option to use the 'GDebi Package Installer' ?.
- - if so, does that installer - also work ?

just tested on opera cause i don't have it installed and right clicking and using that option opens the same package installer, and when install is clicked the package installer closes out.

can you now run that Opera.deb file in Terminal:
https://www.lifewire.com/install-deb-packages-2205641
by using that type of command ?
& then watch, for any error ?

still looking for a fix to this.
My default "open with" for .deb files is "gdebi-gtk", which calls itself "GDebi" (there's actually another, different, program called "gdebi") and "GDebi Package Installer" and it crashes (suddenly it's no longer there) all the time when I hit "Install".

When I run it from terminal, after hitting "Install" I get :

Code: Select all

Password:
polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to PolicyKit daemon: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: No session for cookie
==== AUTHENTICATION FAILED ===
Error executing command as another user: Not authorized

This incident has been reported.
and it disappears (crashes).

With

Code: Select all

sudo gdebi-gtk
it installs the .deb file but afterwards it hangs rather than crashes, and I see:

Code: Select all

[sudo] password ...
ERROR:root:lock.release failed
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/share/gdebi/GDebi/GDebiGtk.py", line 857, in finish_dpkg
    lock.release()
RuntimeError: release unlocked lock

Code: Select all

gksu gdebi-gtk
seems to work properly, but rather than mess with that buggy software, I just do:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i package.deb
and it works fine. Opening your file-browser as root, and then rt-clicking on the .deb might also work.

Note: I've installed gksu_2.0.2-9ubuntu1_amd64.deb so gksu works.

from what i'm seeing the other 3 methods work perfectly for opening and installing the deb files, just for some reason just leftclicking them and clicking install crashes the installer without any error message. the saving grace of the other methods is they seem to also grab and install any additional dependencies needed.

The sudo dpkg -i command suggested by Flemur will work if there are no missing dependencies, but dpkg does not handle dependencies at all, so will always fail if there are any dependencies missing from your system.

However, if you use

Code: Select all

sudo apt install /path/to/package.deb
will handle all dependencies just like installing any package from the repos; it just gets the package from a local folder instead.

o.k. you guys have lost me. i know from experience in the past clicking on a deb file opened the one gui and if it needed dependencies it either would off to install them or be red meaning i needed to find and install them. it di not just close out for no apparent reason. all i want to do is try to get to the bottom of why it's now closing without installing the deb file when i click install.

Have you got any problems getting authentication from software manager to install?

Do you get any errors reported in the terminal if you launch gdebi from there and try the install button e.g with gdebi-gtk /path/to/deb.

Flemur's error suggests an issue with polkit.

What does pgrep -a "polkit-" return?

What does pkaction | grep "debian.apt" return?

no like i said the other 3 ways to install the deb files report no errors and add any needed dependencies. i'm truly at a lost. it's like one second it was working just fine and then it wasn't. like i said i'd like to get it fixed, but at least i do have other ways to install the deb files. all i can figure is something i installed broke it, and it could of been anything that did. a actual deb file, a appimage, etc...

Code: Select all

org.debian.apt.cancel-foreign
org.debian.apt.change-config
org.debian.apt.change-repository
org.debian.apt.clean
org.debian.apt.get-trusted-vendor-keys
org.debian.apt.install-file
org.debian.apt.install-or-remove-packages
org.debian.apt.install-packages-from-new-repo
org.debian.apt.install-packages.high-trust-repo
org.debian.apt.install-purchased-packages
org.debian.apt.set-proxy
org.debian.apt.update-cache
org.debian.apt.upgrade-packages
org.debian.aptxapianindex.update

I would look at (=reinstall or reconfigure) polkit (@smurphos) and pkexec, which is broken on my system, and might be the reason my errors act like your errors.

If the package installer that you are asking about in this thread is gdebi, you may need to open gdebi first then use the File ->Open menu to open the package and install it that way. That works for me and is the only way I can get gdebi working as it used to, hence my use of the

Code: Select all

sudo apt install /path/to/package.deb
command instead nowadays.

For some reason it seems to be impossible to install packages in my Xubuntu 18.04 by right clicking a package in the file manager and choosing "Open with gdebi". The GUI for gdebi does start but clicking the install button in that simply closes gdebi with no activity occurring and the package not installing.

Perhaps another example of the bug at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1760910
