[Solved] Cannot update the cache of Software Sources, Update Manager

Hi Guys! I am posting my first post here because i am facing annoying problems right now. I can't seem to update the cache of Software Sources. I try to type sudo apt-get update into terminal but it throws me lots of errors. I can't use Update Manager it says Couldn't refresh the list of updates.

I get "Failed to download repository information" trying to restore default settings and changing mirrors in Software Sources. Any additional PPAs, repositories is unticked (only official repositories). I tried to Fix MergeList problems and purge residual configuration but nothing changed after that.

And i wonder if these errors has anything to do with BleachBit ?. I used it to clean some of my stuff.

Hello, Leauqis.

The screen output displayed by the command sudo apt-get update, which you had posted, reveals that your system tries to connect to an address http://10.106.7.14/, when trying to query the software repositories.
The IP address 10.10.6.7.14, however, is not a public IP address. IP addresses 10.xx.xx.xx are always local IP addresses in a local area network. You cannot connect to them from outside.
Suggests that your network configuration has been messed up.
Whether this has been done by bleachbit, I cannot tell. Maybe.

Hm. Did you connect to this forum and submit your post from the Mint system, which fails to update its cached list of available software?
In case you can still connect from the affected machine to this forum, then this would be a hint that not your whole network configuration has been messed up, but maybe just the APT configuration under /etc/apt.

I didn't post this with any other device and using the internet (wifi) without any problems. The only problem i am facing is that i can't use anything about Update Manager and Software Sources.

Well,i have installed firejail yesterday to make firefox more secure in general. Does that affect my whole network configuration ?. Edited firefox from panel to always use firejail w/o having to type from terminal everytime to use it. I didn't change any of the default settings in firejail.

Hello, Leauqis.

The fact that using your browser - even through firejail - works suggests that indeed your network configuration cannot have been broken completely, if at all.
So it should be something limited to the APT software management system.
By the way, the APT management system configuration has got a few more components than the sources list files.

The sources list files name the http(s) addresses of the software repositories, which your system will query for the lists of available software packages; but the sources list files do not instruct the APT management system how to connect to the server addresses.
You software sources files do not seem to hold any reference to the local IP address 10.10.6.7.14. Nonetheless "sudo apt-get update" tries to connect to precisely 10.10.6.7.14 in order to query any repo address.

Some questions/tasks trying to figure out what may be wrong:

When did "sudo apt-get update" last work correctly? If ever.
What did you change before it stopped working?
Do you connect to the internet directly e.g. via a DSL router?
Or do you connect to the internet through a proxy server?
Or did you connect through a proxy server in the past? But now you connect directly?
Could you, please, post the content of the file /etc/apt/apt.conf? Terminal command to be executed:

I have only used wireless connection since i bought this laptop.
Yesterday i was able to successfully execute sudo apt-get update command via terminal.
I didn't use any wired connection even once with this computer. Also i couldn't find apt.conf file anywhere in file system.

Hello, Leauqis.

The file /etc/apt/apt.conf does not have to exist. In case it exists, it might hold a proxy name and port, through which APT would try to connect to the repo servers. So a non-existent /etc/apt/apt.conf file is ok.

So the command "nslookup" works and returns a correct list of IP addresses for the server pool archive.ubuntu.com.

Yet, ping archive.ubuntu.com fails, telling the server port were unreachable. This might be a routing error. This might also be a temporary problem, caused by the server itself, I assume.

If I ping the same IP address 91.189.88.162, then the result is this (successful):

i executed iwconfig to check if power management is on or off. I changed this to off.
sudo xed /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf changed wifi.powersave = 3 to 2.

(archive.ubuntu.com gets re-routed to steelix.canonical.com, danava.canonical.com etc, depending on the moment...)

...can you try the following & see if it makes any difference whatsoever?
Clean the lists first...sudo rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
Then:
sudo apt-get -o Acquire::ForceIPv4=true update
If nada, the same thing, and then force IPv6 instead:
sudo apt-get -o Acquire::ForceIPv6=true update

Such contains some workarounds for caching and/or proxy related issues, and also instructs apt to only fetch .gz archives from the mirrors.
Hopefully it does the trick, but i admit it's more or less a shot in the dark...

You could also try:

sudo apt-get -o Debug::Acquire::http=true -o Debug::pkgAcquire::Auth=true -o Debug::Hashs=true update 2>&1 | tee aptlog.txt

This will produce lots of output - so maybe it will help in diagnosing why you also get timeouts above...

I have solved the problem completely. Whole problem was router configuration. I tried connecting to several different wifis, it resolved rather quickly. I am currently staying in dormitory and the router's configuration was already pretty strict. It seems like they have taken it to a another level yesterday. Thanks for everyone to gather up for helping me !. I am still not sure how router's configuration can block main mirrors but that is another question !. Still thanks for everyone.
