When do we get Firefox 66.0.1?

Post by Valsodar »

When do we get Firefox 66 for Mint? Antergos users already have it and 65 has a nasty bug which I'm hoping it has been fixed in 66. Synaptic reads the latest available Firefox is 65.

When it's packaged, signed, uploaded to the repository, synchronized to the repository mirror you're using and finally when your update manager is refreshed and sees the update and you install it. It's not yet packaged for Linux Mint (http://packages.linuxmint.com/search.ph ... rd=firefox) but it should be soon.

I was about to say, Firefox has been acting weird of late. YouTube is going wacky every time I open the page and I have to reload the page several times to get it to settle down, and often times, when I click the back button to get back to another page, it hiccups a couple pages back past the one I wanted.

Further, I just upgraded to 19.1, here, so is anybody else having those issues with this version (and I noticed it happening with 19 as well)?

I got the Firefox 66 update today on Mint 18, so if you don't have it yet, you soon will.

Note:

Due to a newly detected security vulnerability in Firefox 66.0.0, we can now rewrite the thread title and question as:
"When will will get Firefox 66.0.1?"
Cf. Firefox 66.0.1

I'm more interested in getting a fix for that sleep problem I mentioned above.

I assume that the Mozilla Firefox developers give a much higher priority to fixing an open security vulnerability, than fixing a nasty technical annoyance.

Which is a wrong policy because from that vulnerability will suffer only a handful of people, whereas most won't even notice it or know about it. While the other thing will affect many more users since most people put their computers to sleep and don't shut them down.

What is the most recent security problem in the just released Firefox 66.0. ? Cant be too serious, can it? I hope not. Googled to find that new security problem in Firefox, yet I cant find it mentioned anywhere. Could you help me out by telling what it is?

Just read an article that mentioned that in the previous Firefox version there were a whopping 5 critical security problems. Jeewhiz! Makes me even more aware of the general saying that the browser is the weakest links on anyones computer.

Thanks Catweazel! I overlooked that link, thought it only was about Firefox 66.01, but it also mentions 2 security issues in the current Firefox 66.0.

I guess it is normal that there are always/often critical securtiy problems present in any browser version. No need to worry, but I did anyway because it was the first time I realised there ARE always security problems, even severe ones, in any browser version.

Now back to the thread question. When do we get Firefox 66.01 and how many security issues will that update have upon release....

If fixing the recently identified security issue in Firefox 66.0 had not been urgent, then the Mozilla would not have done so and published the bugfix release Firefox 66.0.1 only a few days, after publishing Firefox 66.0.
The found and fixed security issue in Firefox 66.0 has been marked as critical.
This strongly suggests that the risk is estimated extremely high by the Mozilla developers that this security issue can and will be exploited.
And to be quite frank, I am pretty confident that the Mozilla developers know their own product better than any forum user here.

Buffer overflows are one of the main attack vectors, which can be exploited by attackers, in order to execute arbitrary malicious code.
And this buffer overflow affects all Firefox 66.0 users.

The technical bug will affect only users, who send their system to sleep for 8 hours with Firefox open. So it can be avoided by closing Firefox before sending the system to sleep until Mozilla will have fixed the underlying bug.
(It has been reported only 4 days ago. So give Mozilla some time to analyze and fix it.)

There is no way for users to avoid the security vulnerability (buffer overflow) from happening, except by updating to Firefox 66.0.1.

Regards,
Karl

I reluctantly tend to agree with your first statement. Yet I could not disagree more on the second statement.
Of course, we users should be worried if any browser is affected by a number of security vulnerabilities, no matter how many security vulnerabilities have been fixed in the most recent version, published every 6 to 8 weeks.
This strongly suggests that at the time being secure software may be an illusion. - Would not be too amazing, because even the underlying hardware (CPU's e.g.) are insecure by design.
Maybe neither the underlying hardware, nor the software development tools have been designed with security in mind. This might mean that developers have little chance of fully securing their software, no matter how hard they try.

Regards,
Karl

When a level 17 forummember is worried, then I am worried again too. Could Firejail or any other Linux designed security program for Firefox be of any help with these contineous security bugs in browsers? Can the risk of a bug in Firefox be toned down by taken extra security measures in Linux?

I use Firefox many times a day, I kill it each time I am not using it, and especially when I shut the laptop down.

just a few minutes ago, when I booted up, FF updated to 66.0.1
I have mine installed direct from Mozilla, so it does not wait for the Repository to be updated.
