Wordpress.org Question

I want to learn how to use Wordpress.org (not .com), but I want to know how to get it going before shelling out for a host.
Can I install it on this box and access it like this box is the server?

I have it installed here in /var/www/html/wordpress but I can't get anything to work, cuz I'm just not understanding something.

How do I open it up? There's nothing in the menus; I first installed it from the Software Manager, but it had no item in any menus, neither does it after installing as per the website.

Anyone get me going here?

Have you installed LAMP stack?
If yes run WordPress by opening localhost/wordpress in your browser.

No, but I did this though:, from
https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_ ... n_Computer
AMPPS: Free WAMP/MAMP/LAMP stack, with inbuilt Softaculous Installer. Can 1 click install and upgrade WordPress and others as well.
It ran through a load of little dots, told me it was all done, but I'm back where I was.

localhost/wordpress came up 404

I don't know how to open it.
(Thanks)

I just tried this way, too, to no avail.
https://codex.wordpress.org/User:Beltranrubo/BitNami
BitNami WordPress Stack is a free, self-contained, easy-to-install package that bundles every piece of software (dependency) necessary to run WordPress for development or production purposes. It includes the latest version of WordPress and is fully configured and ready-to-run.
Everything said it worked, but when the stack opens up, none of its buttons work.

Did a system files restore from this AM's backup and then tried again.
This time Bitnami Wordpress Stack solved all the issues.
Took me all freakin' day to get here.

Thanks all who helped.
