Google updates fail this morning - invalid signatures [Solved]

Post by fstjohn » Fri Apr 12, 2019 9:04 am

Here's the error message:

An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. GPG error: http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable Release: The following signatures were invalid: EXPKEYSIG 1397BC53640DB551 Google Inc. (Linux Packages Signing Authority) <linux-packages-keymaster@google.com>An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. Anything I can do to fix this?

I got the same error, Google needs to update their key. Until they do all you can do is wait.

I thought something was wrong with my set up.

Thanks to this thread I now know that it will eventually get fixed..

Yup - it's annoying and we just have to wait for the fix.

If you want to temporarily bypass this error, open the updater and choose edit>software sources>additional repositories>remove check mark from google / stable ...earth and update your apt cache. then refresh your updater. then when they fix it, just put the check mark back in. To see if it's fixed you'd have to try it with the check mark back in after a few days or week.
Update to issue: I checked a few hours later and it seems they fixed it.

Looks like the Chrome PPA is fixed but Earth is still bad. Probably will be all good in a little while.

Haven't tried that, but the problem solved itself. Guess Google fixed the problem. Everything works now.

I am still getting the following error after 2 days. Should I keep waiting for google to fix it ? What happens if I install other packages without this being successfully run ? I want to install sudo apt-get install libusb-0.1-4 Should I not run it until sudo apt update runs without any error ?

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt update

5 packages can be upgraded. Run 'apt list --upgradable' to see them.

I continued to get this error even after google updated the keys and resigned the repository. I solved it as follows -

$ sudo apt-key list
look for all google keys and delete each one as
$ sudo apt-key del "EB4C 1BFD 4F04 2F6D DDCC EC9.... " // full hex key

Open 'software sources' from gui and remove google repository

$ sudo apt-get update // no error

Now install Dart afresh (or whichever google package you want to install)

$ sudo sh -c 'curl https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add -'
$ sudo sh -c 'curl https://storage.googleapis.com/download ... table.list > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/dart_stable.list'

$ sudo apt-get update // no error
