Linux mint wakeup problem

Post by Mizar »

Hi all. I'm very new with linux so could you help me solve one problem please? Sometimes when i'm opening my laptop's lid mint doesn't wake up. The only thing that i can do - shut down laptop with power button and the start it again. As i can understand tehre is not only display problem, because i have several web based services and they stops too. I have Linux Mint 19 Tara, xfce edition. In the power manager i set "When laptop closed" option to "switch off display". Do you have any ideas what happens and how can i fix it? Thank you

Hi Mizar.

I can't help solve the actual issue, but there may be a workaround. The next time it happens, just blindly type your password and hit Enter and see if that gets you back up and running.

I'm sure others will have better ideas.

Good luck.

Some (older) laptops also have a switch at the back panel. My old Thinkpad X61 had one.
Hi Ottavio

The laptop is Lenovo B50-10 and this model doesn't has any wakeup hotkeys. Usually laptop wakes up when i open lid. But about 1 case of 30 when i open the lid the laptop doesn't wake up

I have a Lenovo G710 laptop with a seperate Nvidia GeForce graphics chip, I used to have the same problem and discovered it was the Nvidia graphics driver causing the problem, I changed a setting (can't remember where) so it defaulted to the onboard graphics chip not the GeForce.

Try /var/log/syslog1
Hi Ottavio,

I has checked logs and there are no occurrences of "wake". I checked logs and i can't see anything strange here. Just regular logs and then system just stops to write logs. Do you have any idea what can happens here?

Hi Ottavio. Sorry for the late answer, but laptop worked about 1 month without any problems :)

Is this a dual boot computer? If not, my guess is the lid switch has become defective while using linux and would do the same if running windows too.

I posted a reply and it failed to show up.

In short, I pointed out you might need to follow same path as some HP users have, and disable ACPI during boot process. It seems that is interfering.

Hi Spearmint,

I know that this is strange, but i can't boot Linux with acpi=off. I had boot screen (linux mint logo) for more then 30 minutes and then reboot it without this option. I tried to google it - but in all cases that i found acpi=off only helped to boot, but never lead to some boot problems. Do you know what it can be? I am really surprised

Thanks

I believe they were disabling ACPI in the computer's BIOS.

Dec 15 00:08:32 mizar-Lenovo-B50-10 systemd[1]: Started Make remote CUPS printers available locally.
If i understand it correctly - there are some problem with updating timestamp for the one of jobs, but i'm not sure that my understanding is correct. Will be grateful for any help.

P.S. Mint version is Linux Mint 19 Tara

It worked a week, then problems again. Sounds more like a hardware problem. Is that a Seagate HDD? Checked the SMART values on it using DISKS program? Could be bad sectors in drive increasing.
