New 5.0 Kernel

Post by ajgringo619 » Wed May 15, 2019 7:48 pm

Anyone tried it out yet? I have older hardware so I'm not sure what benefit(s) I'd get - AMD Radeon R9 290, Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 MB. I did install in on my test VM (Mint 19.1 MATE, VB 6.0.4) and the mouse pointer kept disappearing. VB 6.0.8 just came out yesterday so maybe that will fix it.
Mint 19.1 XFCE

AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core w/16 GB RAM

I'm running 5.0.0-15-lowlatency and it's running fine on my bleeding-edge kit. dmesg doesn't record any errors at all.

Scratch that. I spoke too soon. It seems that kernel 5.0.0 doesn't work with nVidia proprietary drivers. I ended up with a single screen and hanging on both reboot and shutdown. systemd was getting to the reboot and shutdown target cleanly but the system hung at the reboot or shutdown step. I've had to restore from a backup because my desktop was clobbered.

I'm on Linux Mint 19.1 and after I changed from kernel 4.18.0-18 to 5.0.0-15 my Cinnamon64 with dual Monitors kept crashing down into gnome single desktop until I changed from nvidia-340 driver to xorg nouveau now working normally :?:

So far the only problem I've ran into was a failure to build DKMS modules with the latest AMD GPU drivers (had to remove the drivers anyway, system was hosed); it even built the latest VirtualBox kernel modules without a hitch. Based on your issues, catweazel, maybe this kernel version isn't ready for bleeding-edge video. That said, the stock AMD drivers are working fine.

catweazel,

Which NVidia drivers were you running when you tried Kernel 5.0? It looks like 430.14 was released just this past week. (https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers ... ubuntu/ppa)

I didn't install the kernel until the nVidia update came out. I'm running 430.14.
