Post by siawacsh » Sun Jun 09, 2019 12:22 pm

Hello, hope some one can help me. For no reason whatever I am getting login problems downloading gamil on to my thunderbird. Incoming mail server is
pop.gmail.com
Port 995.

outgoing is:
smtp.gmail.com
Port 565

This is the way it has been for seven years without problems. Can any one hint what it maybe?

Could be a number of things but I would try changing from Pop to imap.gmail.com ?

IMAP is what I've had for ages, been a long time since I used a Pop/Pop3 setting.

Have you tried gmail from your web browser to see if that works ?

Yes, I can access gmail from the browswer. OK, I will try IMAP and see how it goes. But I have these settings for years without problems.

It is a known problem but without a unified solution. One guy says he solved it by resetting cookies. I tried it without success.

I notice you have Port 995 in the first post, did you try 993 as per Google recommendation ?

Yes, I tried both that cause the error message to change. 993 ilicits the first error messae. 995 the latter

Do you think reinstalling Thunderbird would do it?

Worth a try to reinstall, I assume you have things backed up anyway ?

Is Mint the only OS you are using Thunderbird for ?

Yes, Mint 18.3 is the only one. And I don't intend to reinstall the OS. At least not yet. I am merely going to reinstall the mail client.

And if I do go for the drastic measure I might opt for Mint 19. Has any one experienced bugs with 19?

Do I have to install nvidia driver manually in compatibility mode?

Well I am using Mint 19.1, and Thunderbird 60.7.0 (64bit) and have had zero issues.

I guess I was assuming you were on 19.1 too

I did a clean install of 19.1 and it is so much better that other versions of Mint I used.

I run multiple OS's, WIn10, Ubuntu 18.4 and Mint 19.1 on this computer, and am finding I'm running Mint most of the time now.

My platform has been fine since installing it two years ago. Never had a problem with any version of thunderbird. Seems a very drastic and time consuming solution to the authentication problem.

I'm assuming you don't have a backup from before this happened ?

I do at least weekly bkups, more if I change something.

You could try setting up a different user Gmail account, see if that works, or even try a different email program.

I have backups. But even with backups (locally and cloud) in the past I have lost data.

For example, I always backup the ./thunderbird folder. So when I install a new system I copy and paste into home folder and 8 times out of 10 I have everything up and running as before. But with each iteration of the OS there are new things to learn and with it potential loss of data. Last time I upgraded from Mint 17 to 18 I lost a lot. You would think backing up should be straight forward. The backup tools are the worse for this. That is why I do it manually copy and paste.

Your smtp port (565) is wrong.
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server
smtp.gmail.com

Requires SSL: Yes

Requires TLS: Yes (if available)

Requires Authentication: Yes

Port for SSL: 465

Port for TLS/STARTTLS: 587

Just tried that. Now I am back to the intial error above.

sending of password did not succeed. Mail server imap.gmail.com responded: password not accepted.
If you remember on recommendation I set gmail to imap.

I think you're going to have to log into your google account and relax the security for third party email clients. I'll see if I can find out what I did when I get home later on today.
