LM 19.1 MATE 64bit - How to install Open Visual Traceroute?

Post by Centauri39 »

Since LM 19.1 MATE 64bit is based on Ubuntu 18.04, there's no gksu anymore,
but Open Visual Traceroute depends on that package.
How am I supposed to install this tool now?

Starting with Ubuntu 18.04 and likewise the associated Linux Mint variants, the gksu was removed. The pkexec command is a gui replacement.

Yes, I know, but how can I use that information to get Open Visual Traceroute installed?
Remember, this tool depends on gksu.

Thank you!
I will try that as soon as possible.
But this leads me to the question, why on earth is gksu abandoned before an adequate alternative can be offered (no, pkexec is none!)?

That question should go to the Ubuntu developers. Most of the Ubuntu and Mint code is the same, the main difference being the different desk tops in Mint and Ubuntu

I know.
Indeed, I was addressing them.

This isn't the correct place for that. You may search github Ubuntu for the proper place.

GKSU was abandoned by it's developer in 2014 with unfixed security issues and subsequently removed from Debian sources and thus Ubuntu. There are many other ways applications can get elevated privileges and if you are going to grumble at anyone I'd grumble at the developers of Open Trace Route for failing to provide a working packaged version for current LTS release nearly 18 months after than LTS release. The portable version appears to broken in any case with or without gksu

Sorry to disagree, but I used to run that tool absolute flawlessly on several versions of Mint, as long as they were based on Ubuntu 16.04.
It just refused to get installed for distros based on Ubuntu 18.04 because of the abandoned gksu.

Nope the portable version, tweaked not to need GKSU appears to have a problem with 18.04's default Java version aswell which prevents it running. If it didn't I'd have given you instructions as to how do run the portable version without GKSU.
