K3b & Brasero no longer able to burn cds <Solved>

Post by jackroq »

When I try to burn a CD (music, data, .iso, files from my PC) K3B says
cdrecord has no permission to open the device
Modify device settings in K3b to solve this problem

Then the burn request is cancelled.
Can anyone help me give cdrecord permission to open the device (cd player I assume).
I am running mate 19 on my HP 8300 pc.

Easiest fix: download Xfburn from the LinuxMInt software manager.

Xfburn is the easiest to use cdburner available, recommended by many forummembers.

Brasero has got issues. K3b is great, but sometimes takes a lot of installing extra's before it will work properly.

For more detailed advice on good cdbuners in LinuxMint you could read a helpful post about it on this forum:

cdrecord has no permission to open the device

K3b is a GUI-based application, so sudo should not be used. sudo is for command line applications.

For GUI applications, you'd want to use pkexec (for LM 19.x and later), or gksudo (for LM 18.x and earlier).

Hi jackroq,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

See the link referenced from "carum carvi" reply and repeated below.

cd burner for mint 19
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=279918&hilit=regionset#p1541394

+ 1 for installing "xfburn" for basic CD/DVD disc application.

I also had issues with the superb "K3b" after updating to Linux Mint 19.x, but the instructions in my replies in the link above resolved them. And although I don't have a Blu-Ray burner (really want one), I also installed those packages, rebooted and "K3b" works great now.

Hope this helps ...
