<SOLVED> Uninstalled Firefox from Synaptic, now cannot re-install (not found)

Post by mingle »

Hi Guys,

This is puzzling me - I did a clean install of Linux Mint 19.1 64-bit xfce and removed most of the install applications (including Firefox), using Synaptic.

I'd now like to reinstall, but when I go into Synaptic (or the Software Manager), Firefox is nowhere to be found.

Any idea why this would be and how can I get it back?

Cheers,

Mike.

If you run this command, does Firefox return to Synaptic? If so, install it from there:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt update
If not, you can install it with:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt install firefox

Sorry for the late reply...

That seemed to do the trick...

I always assumed that update manager did a "sudo apt update " every time it runs - am I mistaken?

Cheers,

Mike.

Hi, mingle.

You should not mix up
  • Update Manager (only offers & installs software updates, cannot be used to install additional software)
  • Software Manager (offers all available software for installation, can be used to install additional software, including software flatpaks, can uninstall installed software)
  • Synaptic Package Manager (offers all available software for installation, can be used to install additional software, can uninstall installed software)
Do not assume that the Update Manager will refresh the list of available software, every time you open its application window. If in doubt, click the [Refresh] button.
The same procedure applies to Software Manager and Synaptic.

The corresponding terminal command is sudo apt-get update. Refreshes the list of available software packages.

Regards,
Karl

@Karl,

Thanks for the info.

Am I correct in assuming that Update Manager, Software Manager and Synaptic are all 'front-ends' to APT?

Cheers,

Mike.
