I'm having a dickens of a time upgrading xscreensaver

Post by James_Smith »

I have version 5.36 and I want to upgrade to 5.43. I downloaded the tar.gz and followed the instructions and restarted my computer but it still shows that I'm using 5.36. I've tried this several times.

Should I uninstall 5.36 and then install 5.43? If that's what I have to do then fine but it seems like there would be a more economical way of upgrading.

Thanks
sudo apt-get --purge remove macOS

I decided to totally delete the previous version of xscreensaver and start fresh with 5.43. Here's what I did and saw...

    #################################################################

Warning: The "pkg-config" program was not found. Without that,
detection of the various GTK libraries won't work.

Warning: The GTK libraries do not seem to be available; the
             `xscreensaver-demo' program requires them.

Warning: The GDK-Pixbuf library was not found.

Some of the demos will not use images as much as they could.
You should consider installing GDK-Pixbuf and re-running
             configure.

Note: The JPEG library was not found.
This means that it won't be possible for the image-manipulating
display modes to load files from disk; and it also means that
the `webcollage' program will be much slower.

Note: The PNG library was not found.
Many things aren't going to work right.

Note: The Xft library was not found.
This means that fonts won't be anti-aliased.

Note: The OpenGL 3D library was not found.

More specifically, we found the headers, but not the
libraries; so either GL is half-installed on this
system, or something else went wrong. The `config.log'
             file might contain some clues.

Those demos which use 3D will not be built or installed.
You might want to consider installing OpenGL and
             re-running configure.

    #################################################################

User programs will be installed in /usr/local/bin/
Screen savers will be installed in /usr/local/libexec/xscreensaver/
Configuration dialogs will be installed in /usr/local/share/xscreensaver/config/
System-wide default settings will be installed in /etc/X11/app-defaults/

I see a lot of warnings there and some stuff missing but I'm not good enough with this stuff yet to understand what it means. Can someone help?

Make your life easier and use the PPA - https://launchpad.net/~hda-me/+archive/ ... creensaver

It hasn't got 5.43 yet, but is on 5.42.1
