LibreOffice Writer randomly crashes

Post by DDR-4 » Fri Aug 02, 2019 11:34 am

Hi all,

I'm running Linux Mint 18 Sarah MATE 64bit on my Acer Aspire 5735 laptop 4GB ram.

Problem is when I hover the mouse over the GUI of LibreOffice Writer the whole of the Xserver randomly crashes.

It's not that often - say 2 or 3 times a week maybe.

But it is frustrating as I lose all my virtual desktops with the open windows I'm working on.

So I have to wait for the Xserver to restart and then login again and figure out all the windows I had opened and manually restore the whole desktop again.

Any ideas what's causing LibreOffice Write to crash the Xserver please?

TIA

Keith

If you are using version 6.2.5, instead use the version 6.1.x, that is the versions for use to be used in production. The download page indicates that. First purge the existing version then install new. I had a weird problem which was resolved by this. Good luck.

DDR-4. I had a similar problem with a Thinkpad E560 running LM18.x Mate. LibreOffice docs and spreadsheets would crash the xwin session, if the window was closed by the user, instead of being saved then closed first in Office. The Laptop is a Hybrid Graphics model and I assumed that the problem was a graphics "handover" timing issue on the window closure. But I found that the issue was resolved after updating to the newest Mesa version in the Mint repos and updating the kernel to the latest in the 4.15.0.x series. So far there have been no more session crashes. Note I also disabled Java in Office but I don't know if there was any link to the problem. Hope this helps...

Thanks for that reply Lanser,

I'll take a look at that and see if that fixes the problem.

Keith
