[UNSOLVABLE] Thunderbird keeps opening links in the wrong browser

Post by Klaas Vaak »

I recently changed my default browser from Firefox to Iridium (= Chromium) to give the latter a try. I have now reverted back to Firefox, but TB keeps opening links in IR. My set-up: Mint 19.2 XFCE 64-bit
* in FF I have set it as my default browser
* in the Mint settings manager, preferred applications, I have reset to FF
* in TB I have set the network.protocol-handler.warn-external for http and https to true
* via the Terminal I have

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
sudo update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
changed to FF
* in the TB profile folder I have changed the default.list file to show FF instead of Iridium-browser.

Also via the Terminal, I tried and got

Code: Select all

xdg-settings get default-web-browser
iridium-browser.desktop
So I corrected it with

Code: Select all

xdg-settings set default-web-browser firefox.desktop
A recheck of

Code: Select all

xdg-settings get default-web-browser
confirmed FF was my default browser.

All to no avail. The only places where I have not made changes are
/snap/core/7270/usr/share/applications/mimeapps.list
/snap/core/7396/usr/share/applications/mimeapps.list
/snap/core18/1066/usr/share/applications/mimeapps.list
/snap/core18/1074/usr/share/applications/mimeapps.list

where
x-scheme-handler/http=xdg-open.desktop
x-scheme-handler/https=xdg-open.desktop

instead of
x-scheme-handler/http=firefox.desktop
x-scheme-handler/https=firefox.desktop

I am wondering:
* could these 2 settings be the guilty parties?
* does changing have any negative effects?

The reason I hesitate about these 2 is because I have not come about a recommendation about them anywhere.
Furthermore, if these 2 aren't the guilty parties, what else could be???

Try

Code: Select all

ls ~/.local/share/applications/
and see if there a desktop file for the old browser (Iridium). If so, remove it, (and maybe log out/back-in)
If not, try

Code: Select all

grep -i ium ~/.local/share/applications/*
which should find chromium or Iridium

Edit:
Also check

Code: Select all

~/.config/mimeapps.list
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Yes, there was such a file. I removed it, logged out/back but it made no difference.
If not, try

Code: Select all

grep -i ium ~/.local/share/applications/*
which should find chromium or Iridium
This is the output:
/home/peter/.local/share/applications/chrome-ohmmkhmmmpcnpikjeljgnaoabkaalbgc-Default.desktop:Exec=/usr/bin/iridium-browser --profile-directory=Default --app-id=ohmmkhmmmpcnpikjeljgnaoabkaalbgc
/home/peter/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:application/xhtml_xml=iridium-browser.desktop;
/home/peter/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:text/html=iridium-browser.desktop;
/home/peter/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:text/xml=iridium-browser.desktop;
/home/peter/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:x-scheme-handler/http=iridium-browser.desktop;
/home/peter/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache:x-scheme-handler/https=iridium-browser.desktop;
What should I do: replace all instances of iridium-browser with firefox, or delete all instances of iridium-browser?
Edit:
Also check

Code: Select all

~/.config/mimeapps.list
I have not done this yet, but if iridium occurs there, what should I do?

you can change the default browser in thunderbird, by going to edit>prefernces>advanced click on config editor button. It will warn you to be careful. click ok
when the editor comes up copy and paste this line Into the search bar.

Code: Select all

network.protocol-handler.warn-external.http

Two lines should come up. change both of them from false to ture by double clicking on them. exit the editor and thunderbird.
The next time you click on a link you will be asked which browser you want to use, choose the browser of your choice. It will now become the default.
good luck.

If you uninstalled it, yes, delete the files. (Those files are some of the junk left over after software package delete/purge)

Code: Select all

~/.config/mimeapps.list
I have not done this yet, but if iridium occurs there, what should I do?
Delete those entries from the lines they're on, and it's likely they're on several lines, so check. Also make sure you retain the ";" (semi-colon) between other entries.

But first try what kc1di suggested.

I mentioned in my original post I had already done that. Unfortunately it did not make any difference.

No, I did not uninstall Iridium, so in those 5 lines of the /home/peter/.local/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache file I replaced iridium-browser.desktop with firefox.desktop.

Code: Select all

~/.config/mimeapps.list
I have not done this yet, but if iridium occurs there, what should I do?

There were no iridium entries in there.

Nevertheless, after making these additional changes, logging out and back in again, still did not do the trick. This is really puzzling because when I changed from Firefox to Iridium, all I had to do to make it work was make the changes in

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
sudo update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser
So why the complications now? And what is still causing TB to open links in Iridium?
