Opinions on Bitwarden, 1Password or Other Alternatives to LastPass

Post by Kendoori »

LastPass has really taken a nosedive in the last year. I need something that will:
1) take an export from LastPass
2) Work across my devices and browsers (Android, iOS, Mint, Windows, Firefox and Chromium)
I have been using LastPass for 10 years and I hate to jump ship, but it's that bad.

My major concern is whether they will hold up business-wise over time... Opinions on that?

Good question. I've been using Bitwarden for less than a year now, so I can't really comment on them long-term. I use the Android app and their website; both work great. Mint doesn't have their PC client in the repos, but there's one you can get via Flatpak.

What happened to LastPass that's making you switch?

Regarding LastPass, they made some changes to the extensions a while ago that made form fills very very iffy. Recently, when triggered from the browser (doesn't matter which one, or whether LM or Windows, the vault will not actually display. The contents are there, because I can see it on my phone. Support had me clear the cache etc.. to no avail. I'm a paying customer of over 10 years and it used to work great.

Things really went downhill after LogMeIn bought them.

It's still amazes me how many times this has happened to all sorts of products, not just software.

Hi Kendoori,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I have been using KeePass for may years and since I switched to Linux, I have been using the superb KeePassXC password manager. If you can export your data from LastPass into a CSV file or a KeePass database format, then you should have no problem importing your data into KeePassXC. If you already have a KeePassXC database, itt appears to be a 2-step process by importing the data into a new KeePassXC Database and then opening your main KeePassXC database and merging the imported database.

There are various KeePass applications available for smartphones and tablets that can use your KeePassXC databases. I do not have any iOS or MacOS products, so I cannot test those. And, I have not been able to try anything Android related until very recently. But, I found that on Android the KeepPass DX and KeePass2Android apps work, search the app stores for "KeePass".

Hope this helps ...

I've been using Bitwarden ever since LastPass changed hands.
Works fine in Win10, Ubuntu and Mint.
