Spices update error SOLVED

Post by cliffcoggin » Fri Aug 23, 2019 5:23 am

Good day folks.

A few days ago I updated Spices Update. Since then I have been getting this error message:
Screenshot from 2019-08-21 16-45-20a.png
It took me a while to find the Looking Glass log which shows the following:
Screenshot from 2019-08-21 16-45-20a.png
What, if anything, can I do to get rid of the error message please?

Since writing the above I deleted then re-installed the Spices Update application in case it was somehow corrupted, however I still got the error message so I deleted it again because a non-functional application is no use to me. Yet I it would be good to have it working so I would still appreciate any clues how to do that.

If you have got a GitHub account raise an issue here https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-spices-applets

If not I'll ping the author and point him in the direction of this thread. He is very active in maintaining his applets so I'd expect a reasonably quick fix.

Thanks Smurphos. I don't have a Github account as I don't understand what Github is for or how to use it, so I'd appreciate it if you could notify Claudiux of the problem for me.

@cliffcoggin Sorry for the inconvenience caused by a simple typo in the code. The next update is coming soon. Please see https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon-s ... -524676454 if you can't wait.

@smurphos Thank you for your report on this issue!

Hell's bells! That repair was quick. Thank you both for your help.

The notification of an error no longer appears, however the panel icon doesn't appear either, nor can I configure the applet. When I look at the Looking Glass log it still has the same three lines in red that I showed earlier.

error t=2019-08-26T11:09:05Z missing } after property list
error t=2019-08-26T11:09:05Z [Applet "SpicesUpdate@claudiux"]: Error importing applet.js from SpicesUpdate@claudiux
error t=2019-08-26T11:09:05Z Could not load applet SpicesUpdate@claudiux

@cliffcoggin

Please try this:

Right-click on the panel, then Add applets to the panel.

Click on Spices Update, then on the Uninstall button. Close this window.

Then:

Code: Select all

cd ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets
wget https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/files/applets/SpicesUpdate@claudiux.zip?1795e891-f316-403b-9282-c1c63b090fe3 -O SpicesUpdate@claudiux.zip
unzip SpicesUpdate@claudiux.zip
rm -f SpicesUpdate@claudiux.zip
Modify the file "~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/SpicesUpdate@claudiux/metadata.json" with a text editor:

Code: Select all

xed ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/SpicesUpdate@claudiux/metadata.json
It must contain exactly:

Code: Select all

{
    "uuid": "SpicesUpdate@claudiux",
    "name": "Spices Update",
    "max-instances": "1",
    "hide-configuration": false,
    "version": "3.0.4",
    "description": "Warns you when installed Spices (applets, desklets, extensions, themes) require an update or new Spices are available.",
    "multiversion": true,
    "cinnamon-version": [
        "2.8",
        "3.0",
        "3.2",
        "3.4",
        "3.6",
        "3.8",
        "4.0",
        "4.2"
    ],
    "last-edited": 1566855772
}
The "last-edited" field and the previous comma are very important!

Save the file. Then, new Right-click on the panel to Add applets to the panel. Add Spices Update to the panel.

Enjoy it!

Well I got part way through the process and then became stuck. After
~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/SpicesUpdate@claudiux/metadata.json

I got the following which bore no resemblance to what you showed.

What have I done wrong?

Sorry, I wrote the name of the file into a "code" tag. I have edited my previous post.

You must be a magician Claudiux, because the app is working without me having to work through your modified instructions. Let me explain.

Before I uninstalled Spices Update again I clicked on Refresh and it started working, i.e. the icon appeared and I could configure it. I restarted the computer and it still worked. I have looked in Looking Glass log and there are no red warnings.

I don't understand how it happened, but I am grateful it did. Many thanks for your help.
