Read and print downloaded *.pdf

Post by lragan »

I use a Canon MF4270 printer on a local network in my home. I have tried several pdf readers, including acrobat, and have yet to successfully print one of them! The prints come out totally black, or in the case of Adobe PDF Reader, white on black. I am looking to print files correctly without expending my toner on black pages.
Am I the only one that experiences this problem?
Is it unique to my printer?

Without access to the file in question, no one can really say what's going on.

It sounds like a printer driver issue rather than a pdf reader issue.
Do other documents (text, office) print correctly??

Have you downloaded the Cannon Linux driver ?

If you have & the problem persists then I would contact Cannon about the issue...

Hi lragan,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Are you able to print anything else properly in black and white or color? Is it only PDF documents that are not printing correctly?

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

There are a few good PDF viewers and applications, Okular, Evince, Master PDF Editor, etc...

Thanks to all of you. Yes, everything except .pdf files print well -- black on white, as expected. (Not a colour printer) The printer sits on a local network, is accessible from three computers -- two of which run linuxmint operating systems, and one Windows 7. Printing pdf files from the Windows computer works well using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Neither linux computer will print downloaded pdf files correctly. Yes, I have loaded the Canon driver on both linux computers. The same problem exists on any .pdf file, not unique to any particular download.

I have done work-arounds for single pages by copying into a graphics program and printing from there.

Hi lragan,
I don't see anything wrong with the results, so that's a good thing.

What PDF apps have you tried? Is it all PDF files or just those from a particular website?

All pdf files is a very large number :) . I have yet to find a pdf file that prints correctly, from many sources.

I have tried Adobe Reader 9, Ocular, LibreOffice Draw, LibreOffice Writer, and whatever the default is on Chrome.

I did download Canon drivers from the link provided, and the version listed there is already installed.

There is a hard drive on my Samba network, not associated with any computer, where I store files to print. They print from the Windows computer, but neither of the linuxmint ones. It is not really a big deal worth a lot of your time. I leave the Windows machine turned off (my own version of security) except for occasional things I cannot accomplish with linux, when I boot it up, do what I must do, and shut it down. There are a very few things that require Windows. This is the biggest one. Looking forward to the day when I can abandon Windows forever...
