Youtube-dl not up to date

Post by Aeon1111 » Mon Sep 09, 2019 10:59 am

The version of youtube-dl is not up to date in the software manager.
Correct and working version is 2019.09.01

Can someone fix this?

I'd forget about the repo version ever being up to date. I always update to the latest version from the link below using wget.

This is the way I do it:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install python3-pip youtube-dl

Code: Select all

sudo -H pip3 install --upgrade youtube-dl

I like this method better.
Do you then keep updated using sudo youtube-dl -U ?

Have used both wget and curl in the past without issues.

to avoid using sudo everytime you update

Code: Select all

mkdir -p ~/.local/bin
wget https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -O ~/.local/bin/youtube-dl
chmod u+rwx ~/.local/bin/youtube-dl
once you have created the .local/bin directory, mint will add it to the path the next time you log in. so logout and log back in and you can use youtube-dl.
and for updating you will not need sudo

Code: Select all

youtube-dl --update
would be enough.

I simply repeat the second command from time to time. :)

I was curious regarding that. I used this method for an experimental 19.2 MATE install and everything
worked like a champ. I did youtube-dl --version inquiry before and after the second command to verify
yt-dl was updated to the latest version. It is now the same version as the installs where I used wget for the base files and
youtube-dl -U for updates.
This seems better because of not having to change permanent permissions for /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

Hi Aeon1111,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I have been using the instructions which the link from Shultz also shows. Make sure "wget" is installed first from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM).

Code: Select all

sudo wget https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl -O /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl

Code: Select all

sudo chmod a+rx /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl
And every week or so running their update command

Code: Select all

sudo youtube-dl -U
Hope this helps ...

Hi ph21, Yes these exact commands have been working fine for many years, but Pjotr's method is now preferred because of reasons mentioned plus simplicity.
wget was always installed by default
