migrating my 32bits mint to a 64bits one

Post by rouls » Tue Sep 10, 2019 5:43 pm

Hello

Is there an "easy" way to "transform" or migrate my 32Bits to a 64Bits kernel?
I find some tricky ways with new partition, new installation etc... but i would hope there is an easier way?
Thanks in advance :)

Hello, rouls.

Switching from Mint 32-bit to Mint 64-bit is like switching from one operating system to another different operating system: requires a new installation from scratch.

Regards,
Karl

Yes, you will have to reinstall. However if you're going to use the same DE and apps and config otherwise you should be able to keep the hidden config files in /home. I did that when I reinstalled 64 bit Mint on my netbook because Chrome had dropped 32 bit support and that was obviously just the beginning. I've since reinstalled several times (with a separate /home partition) and used the same hidden config files. No problems yet.

ok, i was hoping there is an "upgrade" way to do it softly but it looks like there's not..
i will try to do it, keeping my /home config files safe...
