[SOLVED] sync google drive on NTFS partition

Post by shmu »

I have a second hard disk where I store most of my data, which includes google drive. My Windows installation syncs the google drive folder to the cloud using the google backup and sync tool.
Is there a way in Mint to sync to the cloud that same google drive folder, which is sitting on a NTFS partition?

Thanks, but I'm not sure it does what I am looking for. The description says "It lets you mount your Google Drive on Linux." I don't want to mount the cloud drive, I want to sync the actual files to my hard disk.

For sync with an existing folder there are a few choices.

Free, opensource but command line only - I use these tools to make my own sync scripts.
rclone - https://rclone.org/ along with companion utility rclonesync - https://github.com/cjnaz/rclonesync-V2

Free, opensource. Not tried this myself.
Odrive - https://electronjs.org/apps/odrive & https://github.com/liberodark/ODrive
OMG Ubuntu blog article about it - https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2019/02/odr ... nux-client

Paid, closed source. I've never tried it, but I know that people that use it are very satisfied with it.
Insync - https://www.insynchq.com/
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

This is doable with RClone, but IMHO the closed source InSync is the best option. They also now do OneDrive. I have been using it for years and they keep improving it.The

Does rclone sync real files from cloud to disk, or it only mounts the cloud drive?

It syncs. I do this with Gphotos. I'm on the road, but if you are interested I can share my script.

The first step is to install RClone. The key thing is the rclone.conf file, but once you have your drives specified, you end up doing something like this (exact same thing works for GDrive).

You would run something like this as a script via a cron:

rclone --config /home/kenny/.config/rclone/rclone.conf sync GPhotos:/media/by-year /media/kenny/GDrive/GPhotos

The RClone forums are very helpful: https://forum.rclone.org/

It can do both - but it's primarily a sync tool. Note that rclone on it's one is a one way sync only - i.e. a single command line can sync to Google Drive or from, but it won't for example sync new local files to GDrive and new files on GDrive to the local disk.

You need to use the add on https://github.com/cjnaz/rclonesync-V2 for a proper two way sync if that's what you need for your workflow.

Question - are you still intending to dual boot and allow the Windows official client to sync this folder as-well? If so I'd be a little wary of possible conflicts whatever method you use for linux. Keep a separate backup of the data for a while just in case.
