[SOLVED] Wanted - Old Linux Mint Ver 5

Post by martyg »

Hi All;

I hope that this is the correct place for this question..

I am looking for a GOOD Copy that I can Download of Linux Mint (Elyssa) Version 5..

The reason for this is I have an OLD Computer with a '586 CPU and I want to Run Linux Mint on it.. I Love Mint over Ubuntu..
This is for Educational Purposes and for eventually Installing Linux From Scratch on this 586 system, and the Host program would be Linux Mint 5.. It would have access to the internet, but it would be for download purposes and nothing important otherwise..
This project has been inspired by Kernotex running a 486 with Linux From Scratch on it..
THANK YOU Marty

Hi All;

Thank You, Pierre, for Your Answer..

I live in Boulder Colorado USA..

I got a copy of it about a Month ago, but I cannot seem to be able to find where I got it from and I am looking for another source..

Of the sites that I have found that do have Linux Mint, they only go down to Linux Mint 7..

I just Replaced the CPU with another one that I have, and I am loading it right now to see if it is any better, I was having trouble loading (recently)..

I know that it is slow going, but, that is part of the Experience..

THANK YOU Marty

Not exactly a Linux Mint, but a Linux. Can also be installed from floppy...
Floppy boot disk
This floppy diskette can start SliTaz on old PCs with or without a CD-ROM. It can boot SliTaz from a usb flash drive, a SliTaz CD/DVD, a hard drive, the LAN by PXE and even the Internet with gPXE.

Floppy disk (1,44 MB) - image [ md5 ]

You can write this floppy image with SliTaz bootfloppybox, Windows rawrite or simply dd (dd if=floppy-grub4dos of=/dev/fd0).

At least you can use SliTaz for a first test check...

Of course, you tested at least one of the repos at the link for LM 5, right?

I put a link to there for the information only on the page, not for the download.

one of the things, that I'd checked - - was for any valid URLs - - there aren't that many.
- - before I'd even replied to the OPs post.

as most site's seemed to have done an prune of those older ISOs,
& so they don't go back, that far.
:(

NB: LM 9.0 was the next available LTS & that may be, just as good, for your older machine.

Emmabuntüs seems to have a 586 friendly version, and it's meant for old hardware:

Hi All;

Thank You all for the Listing sites..
I have tried all of those sites, and I either get a 404 error or like on the old-app site, it won't let me register correctly..
It keeps saying I need to do the Image, but there is no image to do.. Also for the Password, I don't know how long or how short it needs to be and if it requires some special characters.. I don't get a green checkmark, like I do for my name..

I got emmabuntus to download, I will make a DVD of it and see how or if it will work on my machine, THANK YOU..

THANK YOU Marty

Hi All;

I tried to make a DVD copy of the Emmabuntüs software for my 586, and it says that the file is too large, it won't fit on a DVD..

Try a double sided DVD?

Hi All;

"" Try a double sided DVD? ""

I never heard of such a thing..

Is there a way to divide the file in about half and then copy it to two DVD's ??

THANK YOU Marty

... although it's based on Ubuntu 8.04 which has 384MB as memory requirement; probably that or 512M for Mint 5. Your Pentium 1 is quite unlikely to in fact have that; 64M or 128M max was common for that generation.

Good site, but those are all probably spanish language versions too. Although the operating system could be switched to english, I wonder if it's true for any of the helps in it?

Why would you even say that? Linux Mint install DVDs don't come in multiple language versions now, and seemingly didn't back then; you made me waste time checking in a VM.
