Question about preferred remote access tool

Post by dmaker » Wed Oct 16, 2019 3:22 pm

I am curious about what others prefer to use for remote control software. I have a Mint 19.2 Cinnamon esx vm that I use over a vpn connection to do remote support. Right now I am just using the VMRC for remote control. It's not bad. The connection to the remote location has about 20ms of latency. The VMRC performs fairly well. But it's not really tweakable, so I don't know if maybe something else might feel faster.

What would you use in this situation?

VNC
NoMachine

etc...?

Thanks!

Hi,

I tunnel port 5900 over ssh. On the remote computers I use x11vnc to create the VPN and firewall incomming connections on 5900. Finally, I connect with Remmina at localhost:5900.

The connection:
ssh -L 5900:localhost:5900 xyz@memoteIP

Starting the vnc on the remote machine (from the ssh remote terminal):
x11vnc -display :0

Thanks for the response.

Do you find vnc to be responsive? I tried NoMachine as it had feedback I found saying it was simple and fast. It was both, but no faster than the VMware console. In fact, for screen refreshing, I found the vmrc to be slightly ahead of NoMachine, even.

I am wondering if the performance I am seeing from the vmrc is about as good as any other remote control product/solution.

For WAN use I prefer AnyDesk, which is advertised as "The Fast Remote Desktop". For LAN use, VNC seems just as fast if not slightly faster, and is what I usually use.

I've used nomachine and teamviewer. Found nomachine easy for all the PCs on my LAN.
