How do I install a Win 98 game using wine?

Post by redx87 » Sun Oct 20, 2019 12:55 am

Hi,

I'm using Linux Mint 19.1 on my desktop pc and have Wine-stable installed. Wine seems to be working fine when I install a Windows program but I'm having problems installing a game named "Recoil". It's a futuristic tank shoot 'em up game and when I run the install.exe on the Recoil cd in Wine I just get me a message box with an Okay button saying "Recoil requires Win95/98", then nothing further happens.

Is there some way of getting Wine to run this game please?

Or, is there a way of installing windows 98 in Linux Mint? I do have the Win98 install cd and licence key.

hey you could install playonlinux a gui for wine from there you can click the install button from playonlinux to run the exe file for recoil. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... n&iId=9187 and according to the wine database you should be able to run it with the default wine version within playonlinux but i would recommend you to choose another version sense the default usually crashes during installation.

Try this;
Copy all the files from the CD into the wine C folder, and then run the install from there.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

Thanks mikaelrask,

After reading your reply I tried installing the game using playonlinux but no success. I get part of the way into it and then get a message saying "Wine has crashed" I tried a few times but just get the same result.

Hi Spearmint2 ,

I did as you suggested but it didn't work. I still kept getting the "Recoil requires Win95/98" message box popping up, with no other response from the installer.

Thanks anyway.

Then it sounds like you need to add gnome-boxes or virtualbox (see Package Manager, or Software Manager) and then install a copy of win98 into it.

Try (in a terminal)

Code: Select all

winecfg
-> windows version -> choose Windows 95 or Windows 98.
You might have to install winecfg.

Virtualbox.

Read that database entry again, the newest test result is 5 years old and that's for Fedora. And that's the ONLY good test result. I would not find that encouraging.

Install w98 in a VM per Flemur's advice.

I wonder if this game would work in dosbox?

Update wine to version 4.0 then install crossover and install it there.
I run Hoyles card games 2008 in crossover and it runs perfectly in mint 19.2. I don't have any 98' games to run so I can't tell you if it works.
