Firefox 70 slowdowns, freezes?

Post by cecilieaux »

Has anyone else been experiencing weird slowdowns in website fetching, URL searching, including occasional freezes of the system since "upgrading" Firefox to 70?

Doesn't happen with Chrome. Running Linux Mint 19.2 Tina x86_64.

that Firefox 70 does crash, just like the Firefox 69 was doing ...
- on LinuxMint x86 systems .. not so much, as LinuxMint x64 systems.

Any solution in sight? Or should I just abandon Firefox for Chrome?

No problems with Firefox here. Check your extensions / add-ons: they're the usual suspects for all kinds of web browser misery.

I've experienced the same problem on one of my computers. On my desktop PC, Firefox presents the problem. On my 2 laptops, Firefox does not present the problem.

I've tried several things and the only thing that worked for me is the following.

Prevent Accessibility Services
In most cases, untrustworthy accessibility services have a negative impact on Firefox performance. Probably, that's why Firefox keeps freezing. In this case, you'd better stop accessibility services to access your Firefox. Here's a simple tutorial.
STEP 1. Go to "Options">"Privacy & Security" section.
STEP 2. Scroll down to "Permission" section.
STEP 3. Enable "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" option.
STEP 4. Click on "Restart Firefox now".

This is solution 2 explained here: https://blog.fonepaw.com/firefox-freezes-issue.html

I have read reports of problems with Firefox 70 on Linux Mint.
For now I have blocked this update.
Later I will make a copy of the system and update to see what will happen.

If these slowdowns coincide with the status bar mentioning "Performing TLS handshake" try closing down Firefox, deleting ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profile>.default-release/cert9.db and/or cert8.db (or just starting with a clean/new profile) and seeing what happens then.

The solution for me: Installing the FF fork Waterfox https://www.waterfox.net/ It imported the profile and started up and everything seems to work :D

So it seems to be a FF issue!

FF 70 was crashing at start up. Start up in safe mode resulted in the same crash, the profile editor crashed as well. Installing older versions from the FF website did help but I could not use my old profile.

I just checked and FF 70.0.1 is on all 3 of my PCs.

18.3 Cinnamon
Win7
Win10

all seem to be doing just fine.
