[SOLVED] Evolution not displaying some HTML messages

I've been using the Dark-openSUSE theme for a few months now, never had any problems with my email. Over the last (2) days, some messages - many of which are months old - are basically unreadable (white-on-white text). If I switch to a non-dark theme, then it's OK; no dark theme works.

Any ideas what could have changed? Besides the theme, I've been using the same video driver as well.

I'm tempted to reinstall Evolution, just to see if something got corrupted. The really weird thing is that it's not consistent; for example, I get notification emails from my energy provider, some look fine and others are unreadable, even coming from the same email address.

After switching to the 3.34.1 version (via Flatpak), the problem went away.

Just to update on this for others who have the same problem.

Theres a problem with libwebkit2gtk 2.26 which broke evolution.

gnome have fixed it in evolution 3.34 series (and the flatpak) but have not backported the fix to evolution 3.28

it is currently filed as a bug on launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1841646

A potential fix is just to downgrade the two broken libraries to 2.20 from 2.268. (this is what I did and now my evolution text is fine)

Code: Select all

sudo apt install libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18=2.20.1-1 libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37=2.20.1-1
but make sure downgrading those libraries doesnt affect anything you need

Do you have any problems saving/adding attachments and printing? I ask because there was a post sometime back, OP had installed evolution (3.20 I think) from flatpack and had some of these issues.

EDIT - just checked, running v2.26.2 of libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18 and libwebkit2gtk without issue.

the bug in evolution when using 2.26 ONLY Applies to (some) dark themes. Light themes (and some dark themes) are unaffected

more on it here. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/issues/617

Printing is a problem (can't see my WiFi printer), so I have to print-to-file first then print. I did have to add --filesystem=home to the command line to get it to see all of the directories I wanted it to, though.

That explains it - I'm using light themes.
