Mounting a drive from my old laptop

Post by jgagnon »

I'm using Mint 19.2 Cinnamon, fresh install.

My laptop just died and I'm attempting to mount the old HD to a new laptop (the drive is encrypted with LUKS and is partitioned with LVM). When I plug it in (via a Plugable device that allows me to use a SATA drive on a USB port) it prompts for my passphrase, which I give, but then Mint comes back with "operation cancelled" every time after putting in the passphrase.

I can see the unencrypted boot partition but nothing else is available. I've even tried using the Disks app and seem to be able to unlock the LUKS partition but I can't access it, probably for lack of knowledge how. The unlock seems to work.

Any idea what is going on or what I can do?

Looks like it'll cost ya.

Might be able to use this - cryptsetup is in Synaptic.

I don't know about LUKS volumes but no-one else has replied yet.
If someone does - take their advice.

Thank you for that. I'm seeing what I can do with it now. :D
