Odd,

Didn't seem to work for me, so I went back to 78. I installed, and went to FB and GMAPs, and it was especially noticeable on GMAPs.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Well, I uninstalled Vivaldi, started freezing on latest version.
Latest Chrome freezing, momentarily.
Opera started freezing on latest version.

I'm going to uninstall all browsers except for Firefox.
Firefox works GREAT; no freezes, even with extensions.

No extensions were added to the other 3 browsers.
Runnng LM MATE 19.3, kernel 4.15.0-74.

Just as an addendum here, Brave knows that they are having the same freeze/crash problems that are based on the chromium/chrome base and are trying to rectify them...another update just now makes 3 updates from them in less than 24 hours...they are now at this version...DAMIEN
Version 1.2.42 Chromium: 79.0.3945.117 (Official Build) (64-bit)
EDIT...Well it took a few hours but, Sorry to say,...the newest Brave version just froze on me again, while trying to log back into the forum...lol...im back with Slimjet which is not subject to the freeze problem...If Brave and the other chromium/chrome based problems do not solve this soon, even i will delete them and just stay with Slimjet as they have never been problematic for me...DAMIEN

I installed Slimjet and it freezes badly for me, worse than the latest Chrome. Is there a way to run Slimjet from the menu or must it always run in terminal?

go to this page
https://www.slimjet.com/en/dlpage.php
then click "show all platforms"
Then click "Stable Version (25.0.3.0)
Ubuntu & Debian:

64bit Deb Package(.deb) ( 66.39MB, 2020-01-7, MD5:6B7A2B3C7F7C3F419633F7D03E0D9CFB)
This is if your using a 64 bit system
and then click on the 64bit .Deb Package.
download it by telling it to keep it or whatever, then find it in your downloads folder and then click on it...it will then install itself as a .deb pkg...check back here and let me know it it works...DAMIEN

I have sadly decided to purge Brave Browser at this point...i have used it from its first beta version and was impressed until now...they appear to be totally tied to the umbellical cord of chromium/chrome to such a degree that without them, they cannot stop the freeze/crash problem on their browser...it is either that, or their so-called brave shield add blocker that cannot just be disabled within their settings menu which makes me already suspicious, but as i was trying to disable it bookmark for bookmark, it went into a total fit that i had the audacity to do so forcing me to do an reiusb shutdown of my system...they have lost my trust and feel duty bound to inform others since i was probably one of their better cheerleaders here in the forums...time to cut bait as an old fisherman might say...have gone back to my old standby, Slimjet, which does not exhibit any problems whatsoever...DAMIEN

That's the same package I installed yesterday. I deleted that and installed this one. Again I don't see it in the menu and a search doesn't find it. Yesterday I ran it in terminal using flashpeak-slimjet which is a command I found in an online search. Am I doing this correctly?

The latest Chrome update didn't fix it for me either.

Interesting thing is, I tried increasing my swappiness and, provisionally, that does seem to have fixed it.

I've always suspected that all those 'gurus' didn't actually know more than the UBuntu devs about memory management.

Hi,

Maybe the new Tab Freeze feature available in Chrome 79 is prone to malfunction? Has anybody affected tried disabling it (chrome://flags)?

I tried that, but same freezes.
Thanks.
So far, Firefox and Slimjet are the only 2 that don't freeze on my rigs.

DAMIEN1307,
Yessirree Bobcat! The only problem is that Firefox and Slimjet will not play Netflix videos.
I use a useragent switcher (been through all the many variable settings), but it's a no-go.
I may use a VPN for that purpose.
So, Opera works for Netflix, even though it freezes momentarily sometimes.
I am done with Chrome 'til it's really fixed.
Hasta la Vista.

I just noticed that if hardware acceleration is off, chrome based browswers are freezing in some computers, so the solution is to enable hardware acceleration
