Well, I have to bring something of my own. But here is an impression of my place of residence; down in the valley is heavy infrastructure, but after a good half an hour of walking you're in the hills.AZgl1500 wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2019 9:40 pmthat is a GIF that I copied the 'forum link' from https://www.picgifs.com/emoticons

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
Cinnamon works nearly identically to Finder under Classic Mac OS and Mac OS X. You can go to list mode, get the hierarchy expanding triangles, and then expand on demand. Also, the keyboard shortcuts for file navigation are almost identical to Finder. As a long time Mac user (1986 to 2015) I can vouch for how close Cinnamon is to Apple's Finder environment.absque fenestris wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2019 1:28 amIs there any Data Browser under Linux that, by pressing an additional control button, can display the complete folder contents, including all subfolders in a tree structure? And I don't mean in a separate panel view, but quite simply: the folder in question is opened with its entire contents.
The stupid Finder* can do that, the possibly even stupider Explorer** can't do it - but what does that look like under Linux?
I have tried Caja, Nemo, Nautilus, Dolphin, Double Commander etc, pp but all they can't....

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
As Portreve pointed out it's Nemo's List view. The three buttons on the far right of the toolbar are for switching between Nemo's three views, Icon, List and Compact. You can also use the Keyboard shortcuts Ctrl 1, Ctrl 2, and Ctrl 3 to switch views, switch via the View menu item, or set List view as the default in Preferences / Views.
You can also have a folder only treeview in the Sidebar - View > Sidebar > Tree
An empty folder in List view won't have the arrow to expand.
You can also have a folder only treeview in the Sidebar - View > Sidebar > Tree
So in the snippet you can seeabsque fenestris wrote: ↑Tue Dec 24, 2019 7:15 pmI took a close look at the folders and data tree structure of smurphos screenshot: are all folders really open? All arrows should point downwards - this is not the case...and with Mac Finder, folders in a folder should never have the same name. At least I grew up with this logic.
Counted from below: what is in the "assets" folder? cinnamon.css and thumbnail.png are as dokuments in the folder "cinnamon" - together with the "assets" folder. Is folder "assets" empty, or does it have a content?

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure

Thank you all for the contributions. In order not to scroll around unnecessarily in the own system with examples, I think it would be useful to create a sample folder with several subfolders and irrelevant documents.
This
Sample Folder
can then be viewed with different browsers on different systems, and above all there is no risk of confusion. I get to work. And a question for the moderators: this is supposed to be a comparison of all possible file/data browsers under different Linux Desktops and different operating systems and is probably in the wrong place here.

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
Not quite the tree problem - but how to use Nemo. If I grab the picture in the left Panel with the mouse and throw it in the right Panel at the top in the Terminal and confirm with > Enter, Mirage (my default for pictures) opens and I can look at the picture and see the contents of the folder as miniatures. Interesting. And fast...

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
Not quite the tree problem - I have to rethink. Since I'm a forum member here, I have worked mainly on my Acer netbook on Mint MATE and with the stupid native resolution of 1024 x 600. That was definitely a mistake!
Cinnamon and Nemo is a wonder bag, that I am only now beginning to discover with my high-resolution Monitor on a new Laptop.

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
@ smurphos. Yes, the thing with the downward pointing and the horizontal arrows is clear, and also that an empty folder has no arrow... (here I came into conflict with Screenshots and the Browser itself). And so I know the behaviour from the Finder.
But here we are with my initial question: with the Finder and additionally pressed the Options key, now all folders would have opened here without exception.
Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
Do I understand correctly that Mac's Finder has an option to open the tree with all folders expanded? That unfortunately does not exist in Nemo. What you can do is highlight a folder in list view and use the

Hi Smurphos. Yes, that's exactly what the Mac Finder does. Although I don't know any other Mac user than me, who uses the list representation permanently and knows that this function exists. I'm going to practice. Thanks.

LOL, well you now know a Cinnamon / Nemo user who uses list view exclusively, other than for media folders as I've tweaked nemo to use emblem based cover art for those.

Hi smurphos. I don't know why, but the asterisk opens all subfolders with contents without exception. I just need to hold down the key combination a little longer. Here is a good example, why I like to know about the contents of all folders. With the Asterisk

An attempt with Dolphin on Debian KDE. The Asterisk key has no effect on the contents of subfolders. But the Info window is well done.

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
O.K. Mint Cinnamon 19.3 has said goodbye... And Mint Cinnammon 19.2 as well... spooky graphics.
Obviously I have successfully killed 2 versions of Mint Cinnamon and installed a new Cinnamon 19.3. Debian KDE is still running, no problems. Whether it is to do with my attempts with Nemo and the folder representation by pressing the Asterisk key, I don't know yet. I certainly hope it has nothing to do with this*
Here's another question: it is sometimes said that you should not combine file browser heavyweights like Nemo, Dolphin, Caja or Nautilus in the same Desktop environment. Others say: Fairy Tales! it doesn't matter... However, comparing different browsers becomes difficult if you cannot compare them in the same Desktop.

Re: Folders, Subfolders and a Quick View of the Tree Structure
It's not really an issue - the main problem is that Nemo / Caja on the same system can interfere with each other's management of the desktop. This behaviour can be tamed via dconf. Also Caja hides it's menu entries if it's not installed in a Mate environment, which again is irritating but easily resolvedabsque fenestris wrote: ↑Tue Dec 31, 2019 4:00 amHere's another question: it is sometimes said that you should not combine file browser heavyweights like Nemo, Dolphin, Caja or Nautilus in the same Desktop environment. Thanks.
