Looking for an Image Viewer that can display the GEO Location [Solved]

Post by AZgl1800 »

of an Image, provided the Camera has EXIF GeoLocation enabled

I searched thru Software Manager, and didn't find what I want.

if GIMP can do it, I was not successful in finding out how.

Nor can any of the other pix viewers that I have installed.

I wanted to find out where this picture was taken, it is in Oklahoma, but that is all I know.

was reading a review on NOMACS that claims it can, but it won't.

https://itsfoss.com/image-viewers-linux/

the following uses ImageMagick

this is from the Command Line, piss on that.
https://mikebeach.org/2011/12/17/how-to ... ntu-linux/

another one on using the command line,
https://www.ostechnix.com/how-to-view-i ... -on-linux/

https://www.linux.org/threads/image-vie ... tag.25474/

this talks about XnView, have not installed it yet

Okay,

I found XnView MP as a flatpak in Software Manager, I don't like Flatpaks, but oh well.

it does show EXIF data, and one feature is very neat, you can scroll down thru the filenames, and IF the EXIF data is present, it will show the Date of that EXIF info.

Interestingly enough, out of all the pictures that I have, only the ones that I take with my cellphone camera have EXIF data on them.

Kept on searching, and found that the Official Website has a Deb version....

the Flatpak took almost 5 minutes to install... ugh!
Uninstalled that.

the Deb version installed in less than a minute and appears to be the same program.

What's wrong with installed on your system by default Pix?

Happy to report that XnView MP Deb verison works great.

I exported the EXIF info to Google Maps and it is damn close to where I sit inside my home.
given the Accuracy of cellphone location capabilities, and the fact that I was indoors when I took the shot, good enough. to within about 50 feet.

the RR bridge pix?

when I was looking at PIX, there were no images on my laptop with EXIF data, I was unaware of that fact until I installed XnViewer MP. Pix did not show EXIF info at all to me in those images.

It does now, on the pix that I just took with my cellphone.

This is all it shows on Pix w/o EXIF info, so I did not know it could do that, providing EXIF info is on an Image.

PIX no info.png

XnView MP's directory structure far surpasses what PIX does when looking at a folder.
It shows all the properties, of all the Images, at the same time, you can scroll down through the Images to see if any Image does indeed have EXIF info.

that was how I discovered that none of my Images currently on my laptop, contained any EXIF info at all.
Only those that I created on purpose with EXIF turned on with my cellphone.

all is good, I now have two way to get what I want.
And just maybe, some future reader will learn something in advance.

AND, a Big Plus for XnView MP, it will directly Export to Google Maps, PIX cannot do that.

Hi AZgl1500,

"DigiKam" among many other image applications can show the exif and GPS data (if it is there). My KDE shows this in the file manager as well.

I downloaded the image from your post, but it did not have this data. Is this the original image?

+1 for XnViewMP and Pix

Hope this helps ...

I doubt it, I found on Facebook in our group called "Oklahoma Snapshots".
the poster said that he had just taken the picture, but did not mention with what type camera.

I will look into DigiKam

I am really liking XnView MP simply because it will directly take me to Google Maps in one click.
For me, as a motorcyclist who just up and stops and snaps a lot of pictures, and then when I get back home, WTH was I when I took that pix?? :)

when on trips, I have my Cellphone camera set for GeoLocation=ON

I turn it off when I get home, don't need to advertise where my home is located on Facebook...
that place has a huge amount of lookie lous just trying to find a place to break into.

I just checked an image I shot on my phone in Pix and it gave the correct GPS coordinates. I checked on google maps and it was within 50 ft. I guess the most interesting thing I've discovered was that my phone also gave elevation. I found out my house is 127M above Sea Level. Good to know I don't have to worry about flooding when all the ice caps melt due to global warming.....

BTW, you can use the XnView MP AppImage too. I prefer to use Pix myself though.

yes,
PIX does give the coordinates, but you have to massage the data before you feed it to google maps.
and PIX does not put the East/West indicator on the Longitude, I am at -95 west, it just shows '95.xxx'
It shows N/S and E/W as a statement, not in the LOC lines.

XnView MP gives a Clickable Link to bring up Maps.....
IMO, the much preferred way to do it.

I would not trust the height measure - last I loked at it, I had taken a beach-picture at an oceanside, approximatrely 1 meter above sea level, and it told me, that the picture was taken 58 meter obove sea level.

This is a simple yet powerful program that does it for you
https://gist.github.com/pas-calc/0e6063 ... eo-exif-sh

It uses the Geo Tool (http://geo.klein-computing.de/gpx_tool.html)

I looked at that, downloaded the Zip file,
and do not see a way to install it on my PC.

I saw the resulting image that you linked to, but how do you get the tool itself onto a PC so it shows up in the Menu ?

I already have a tool called GPS Photo Correlate but it is an abomination to try to use it.
you have to select each photo independently, this is not a viewer.

This may be irrelevant now.... but I too dislike flatpaks, and I discovered that XNViewMP is also available from their website as an appimage. Have downloaded that, and it runs very well. Not quite as good as my preferred software which is FastStone Image Viewer... but since that is a Windows program I can only run it using Wine.
