(SOLVED) Moving Thunderbird profile to older version

Post by Frisober »

Hello,
I tried to move my Thunderbird profile (coming from W7 version 68.4.1) to Mint Cinnamon 19.3 (ASUS K53S, 64 bits, 8GB with only Mint installed) with Thunderbird 68.2.2.
TB wants me to create a new profile. How can I solve that?
I see no update in Mint 19.3 to TB 68.4.1. and do not know how to install that (if possible) as being relatively new on the Mint-front.... so I need rather detailed information or I'm lost I am afraid

Launch Thunderbird using command thunderbird -ProfileManager and select the profile. When Thunderbird is launched, choose Troubleshooter (or what ever it is) and there about:profiles and set the default profile.

Hi Kukamuumuka, thanks for the quick reply.
If I do al suggested I can choose between default-release and default but both give me the same opportunity to choose for a new profile..... So I can not move to step 2 of your answer.
Or do I miss something

Hello, Frisober.

I would like to suggest to you a way of getting Thunderbird 68.4.1 on your Mint 19.3.
I cannot promise you, however, that Thunderbird 68.4.1 for Linux will accept the user profile of Thunderbird 68.4.1 coming from Windows.
Anyway.
You might resort to this Launchpad PPA in order to update to Thunderbird 68.4.1: PPA for Ubuntu Mozilla Security Team
You add the PPA to your Software Sources once. You click [Refresh] in Update Manager. UM should offer to update Thunderbird to 68.4.1.
If you are lucky Thunderbird 68.4.1 for Linux will simply accept the offered Thunderbird for Windows user profile, as explained by user kukamuumuka above.

HTH,
Karl

P.S.: Yes, I do use the recommended PPA myself.

You may want to try this;
1. Copy the Windows TB profile folder (ex.: 2h92vl7r.default) to the /home/username/.thunderbird folder.
2. Exit.
3. Reboot.

It worked for me.
Good luck.

The easiest fix is to update the version that is in the repository. It is also the safest method of updating.

Hi, Linux-Bill.

The mentioned PPA offers the candidates, which may be accepted for deployment through the official Ubuntu repos.
Not every version which can be found in the PPA will be accepted and will make its way into the official Ubuntu repos.
But all Thunderbird versions in the official Ubuntu repos will have their origin in this PPA.
After all it is the PPA for Ubuntu Mozilla Security Team.

Hello karichen,
your advice worked well for being able to install TB 68.4.1 and apply the new profile.
Now the 'only' problem is that TB does not keep the passwords.
I have to fill them out every time and if I look at preferences etc. there are no stored passwords.
Anybody a bright idea??

When you open TB, the log-in box appears.
Enter password, then check the box "Use Password Manager to remember this password".

You can go to Edit/Preferences/Security/Passwords and setup a Master Password for sites.

Hello, Frisober.

All that I remember at the moment is that other users, who had transferred their Thunderbird Windows profiles to Linux Mint, experienced precisely this problem as well. Yet, I do not remember what precisely the root cause had been and how they had solved it. :(

Hi Joe2Shoe,
I fill out every time the password and mark that I want them to be remembered...... but every time I open TB the same procedure is needed. If I try to send something .
Maybe the result of 'wanting' this version instead of the 68.2.2?

Hi all good helpers,
I think I fixed it all now. I deleted 'pkcs11.txt' from the profile and now it looks ok.
Thanks, everybody!!

Hi, Frisober.

Great that you managed to solve the issue. :)
Has Thunderbird recreated a new file pks11.txt? I ask, because here on Mint 19.3 Thunderbird 68.4.1 the file pks11.txt is present.
