How to enable HTML5 geolocation

Post by JChristensen »

HTML5 geolocation appears to be disabled in Mint for both Firefox and Chromium (standard installs from the repo.) Normally I'd be fine with this but I recently needed to use a web site that required it to work and I cannot find how to enable it. So I ended up having to use Windoze (same version of FF) to get the job done :-( I searched in about:config for "geo" and all settings seem the same between Mint and Windows.

I've been using this page to test: https://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.as ... tion_error

The POSITION_UNAVAILABLE status is returned consistently on Mint (several machines, FF and Chromium), Lubuntu (FF and Chromium) and Raspbian (Chromium), even though I answer "Allow" to the prompt "Will you allow <site> to access your location?"

Your test site above worked fine for me using Opera.
I did accept the 'Allow site to access your location' question..

RIH, thanks, sounds like it's definitely something in the browsers then. Seems like it would be an option somewhere, but I sure can't find it.

I'm pretty sure that when you visit a site that requests your location then the browser will pop up a notification giving you the option to allow or disallow. Certainly that's what happened for me when I visited in both Opera and Firefox.

I did notice in the Firefox popup there was an option to "Remember this decision". Maybe at some time in the past you ticked that option and then clicked the "Don't Allow" button and now your browser doesn't even bother showing you the popup and just disallows automatically?

murray, thanks. I do see the popup notification to allow access to location and I click "allow". I've checked in settings and there are no sites saved under location permissions.

I haven't tried Opera, maybe I should. It doesn't seem to be in the Mint repo. How do you suggest to install? Use the .deb file from opera.com?

Yes, just follow the instruction on the Opera website.

I installed Opera and yes indeed, geolocation works. Wish I could get it working with FF and Chromium, though. I have to think there must be a way.
