Can someone give me the proper source for instructions on installing, updating definitions, and running CLAMAV ?

I tried several website instruction sets that I found by Google search but so far none of them have worked properly.

Linux Mint 19.3 mate.

Thanks.
I just installed ClamAV using the Software Manager. Just look for clamtk. It will install all the necessary additional programs that will be needed.

You can update definitions, and schedule scans.

Whilst ClamAV is the only Linux AV software that I know of...
Sophos https://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/f ... linux.aspx is one (the free one is very limited; you have to pay for it to get the full features). This is not an endorsement; just letting you all know it's out there. There are a few others, as well.

The only reason I would want an AV is to prevent Windwoes or Mac viruses from piggybacking to a Windlows or MAC machine on a file I created in Linux, then share with someone using Windoze or Mac machines

The program that does the scanning is called clamscan. It has a numerous switches to use when running this from terminal.

Type this command to see all the available switches:

Code: Select all

man clamscan
As you can see, there are so many switches to use, but I think you should be able to follow what they are.

Jerry:

The problem that I am having is not running the virus scan itself but trying to get the definitions updated.

When I run the clamfresh command, it tries to do a download of some update file but it can not seem to
find the file because it comes back and says that it can not find it and then says that it is going to try again
in 5 seconds, which it does, just keeps doing this over and over again. And yes, I am connected to the internet.
I would give you the URL string for the file it is trying to download but won't allow me to copy it from the terminal interface.

Thanks.

Wrote it down with good ole paper and pencil.

ERROR: Can't open /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log in append mode (check permissions!).
ERROR: Problem with internal logger (UpdateLogFile = /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log).

Good news was that I was able download daily.cvd using your link.

sudo freshclam --update
On the freshclam "man page"
https://linux.die.net/man/1/freshclam
there is no --update argument.

man clamscan sounds like a "special" irritation you get down there
no one is shaming anyone using antivirus for linux but guess what, i don't even have antivirus for windows10 so why should i bother using it in linux. i bought a new ryzen5 lenovo flex14 win10 and the first thing i did is uninstall antivirus mcafee i think it was and disabled real time protection in windows defender

now i don't say you should do what i do, but in my case i know where my "pen is" been <<< if you know what i mean

I know why I get those errors. The service freshclam is running in the background already. It has the freshclam.log file open and won't let me use it while it's open already.
When I run the clamfresh command, it tries to do a download of some update file but it can not seem to
find the file because it comes back and says that it can not find it and then says that it is going to try again

Can you tell me what your exact command is get your update?

Also, can you copy and past the result of this command from Terminal:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/clamav/freshclam.log
Please paste the results between code tags. If you don't know how:

In your forum reply window, click on code tag button.
That button is found above where you type your postings/replies. It looks like this:

< / >

and will insert the code tags that look like this:

[ code ] [ /code ]

Paste the output between those two code tags.

Like JerryF, i am happily using Clam via ClamTK, and i think i had done pretty much as he sugested to get it working. Just yesterday i updated the virus definitions to scan a file i wanted to put on a windows PC. Everything works perfectly.

It might be a case of not going against the flow and following the suggestions of those of us that can and do use ClamAV fine? Even if it means using a GUI?
Laptop overheating? Check link here:itsfoss guide . A move from Cinnamon to XFCE can give a -5 to -10 degrees C change on overheating hardware.

Just to set the record straight, I don't use ClamAV. I just installed it on my Mint 19.3 that's in VirtualBox to test and troubleshoot ClamAV. I also use that virtual machine to experiment with other scenarios.

Interesting, isn't it, how often it turns out the instructions work fine, if one just follows them. 8)

I'm 100% certain that if i did not use ClamAV in Linux Mint, that lovely dual-boot Ryzen 5 system i set up not that long ago would have become infected with malware. ClamAV correctly identified a tool i was going to use (to get around registering Windows) as containing malware. It was not a false-positive. There have been one or two other occasions where it has worked to stop an infected file moving from Linux (where i download things and connect to the internet) where it was benign, to a windows system where it likely would have hosed an installation. Sure over 6 years use that is not often, but all it takes is one single malware on a Windows system and your in trouble.

To put this directly: if you're using a tool to get around registering Windows, of course it's probably malware.

With regard to the other two occasions, you would have had to run the malware in Windows that was obtained in Linux.

This is what everyone has always been drilling in to all users, no matter the OS. You must know what you're downloading and is it trustworthy?
